Japan's meteorological agency confirmed the quake, measuring the magnitude at 6.9, and said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and no sign of a tsunami. But, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude was 6.6.
The quake hit around 12:25 p.m. local time, and the epicentre was several hundred kilometers south of Tokyo near the Ogasawara or Bonin Islands, with a depth of 300 miles, according to AP.
Ironically, Shintaro Ishihara, governor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, was set to announce a new plan this morning, which will require owners of buildings along emergency routes to perform tests for earthquake-resistance.
