The blast collapsed William C Franks Furniture store near Wayne, Michigan, and triggered a precautionary search for the source of the leak or other leaks.
John Zech, Wayne's city manager, said in broadcast remarks that there was a report of someone smelling gas before the explosion.

Gas officials evacuated city hall and additional homes after finding a second gas leak in the neighbourhood where the store was located, according to the Detroit News newspaper.
The explosion and collapse seriously injured owner William Franks, who has operated the store for nearly four decades. He was pulled out of the debris.
The debris removal and danger of further collapse at either end of the building, where building remnants remained standing, made for a 'very slow and tedious process,' a rescue worker told reporters.
