“We want to assure you that the only information that was obtained was your e-mail address,” Walgreens told customers in an apologetic e-mail.
“Your prescription information, account and any other personally identifiable information were not at risk because such data is not contained in the e-mail system, and no access was gained to Walgreens consumer data systems.”
Walgreens Customer Email Hacked
A Walgreens spokesman said the company became aware of the hacking incident about a week ago and began notifying subscribers Friday, Dec. 10.
“Only e-mail addresses were obtained,” the spokesman told the Chicago Tribune.
The spokesman said no other personal information, such as prescription details, was available to the hacker or hackers. He declined to provide the number of e-mails accessed or to name the source of the unauthorized access.
Walgreens said access was gained to a list of customers who receive special offers and newsletters via e-mail. Some customers may have received spam e-mail that asked them to visit another website and enter personal data, the company said.
“We are sorry this has taken place and for any inconvenience to you,” Walgreens said.
