Mrs Edwards, who is still married to the two-time U.S. presidential candidate, was moved to her home to be with family and friends after she was hospitalised briefly last week.
A friend of the family said in a statement that Edwards, their three children, and other family members were with the 61-year-old at her Chapel Hill, North Carolina home.
The statement yesterday said Mrs Edwards was in good spirits, and is not in pain.
Yesterday People magazine reported doctors as saying that the breast cancer first diagnosed in 2004 'had metastasised to the liver'.
'Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends,' the Edwards family said in their statement.
Mrs Edwards herself said in a Facebook posting yesterday: 'I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces, my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope.
