This avian death en masse follows a similar incident in Beebe, Ark., just three days ago, when more than 3,000 blackbirds fell almost simultaneously from the sky. Necropsies of those birds revealed that they died from blood clots caused by internal injuries.
The birds reportedly landed in Pointe Coupee Parish lying face down, together in groups, or on their back with wings and legs rigidly pointing upwards.
In Louisiana, biologists working with the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are busy collecting the corpses from Pointe Coupee Parish for testing. According to the U.S Geological Survey, there are records of at least 16 instances in the past 30 years involving more than 1,000 blackbirds dying unexpectedly.
