Remember the very handsome James Dean? How could we forget? The legendary bad boy and ‘Little Bastard’ was killed in a car crash driving a Boxster Spyder 550.
Times have changed, and this Sypder has just gotten better.
I am not the type to judge a book by its cover. Because this iconic car is handsome to look at, starts at just under $73,000 which is a few thousand dollars more than the Boxster S, I am expecting more from this car.

This two-seater is the featherweight member of the Porsche line up, weighing in at just 1,275kgs. The Spyder is 80 kg lighter than the Boxster S.
The doors are aluminum and the 19-inch wheels are the lightest that Porsche makes.
The biggest cut in weight has come from removing the fully powered, twenty-one kilogram retractable softtop from the Boxster S and replacing it with a very light canvas style roof. It weighs just seven kilograms!
Porsche sent me a YouTube video on how to put the top up and down, and it had me a bit worried. It took about five minutes for the pros to do it and I managed in about the same amount of time.
It’s not as complicated as it looks, but it is a heck of a lot more complex than just pushing a button. Once you unlatch some of the pieces, you have to fold it up in two sections and do your best to tuck it away so you can close the trunk. Keep in mind that the retractable roof on the Boxster goes up and down in twelve seconds.
I think it is a crime to drive with the top up on any convertible. And Porsche agrees with me saying: “The new member of the Boxster family was developed first and foremost for driving in the open air".
