In an online chat session with The Times, a company support analyst said shortly after 7 p.m. that the outage had lasted about two hours. He said the outages were reported from Northern California to San Diego.
He said the problem appeared to be with Time Warner's central Internet connection. There was no estimate on when service would be restored, the analyst said.
The loss of Internet service sparked a wave of complaints by customers on Twitter. "My Internet has been down for 2 hours," one person said shortly after 7 p.m. "I wish I had better choices," said another person.
