Desperate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to make a rare plea for foreign help when 15,000 householders had to flee the inferno.
In just 24 hours the country’s meagre firefighting crews have been overwhelmed by the rampant blaze, which killed 40 guards when their bus was torched on their way to evacuate a jail.
Two British rescue helicopters yesterday joined a 20-strong global deployment of aircraft dropping water and chemicals over Haifa, north Israel.
Mr Netanyahu said: “This is a disaster of unprecedented proportions.”
