Matthew Hoffman, 30, faces life in prison without parole for the stabbing deaths of Tina Herrmann, 32; her son Kody Maynard, 11; and family friend Stephanie Sprang, 41.
The court heard that Hoffman attacked the trio in Herrmann's home, cut up their bodies and tried to hide their remains in a hollow tree.
Herrmann's 13-year-old daughter, Sarah Maynard, was later found bound and gagged in Hoffman's basement.
A manager from Tina Herrmann's workplace checked her home when she failed to show up for work two days in a row in mid-November.
He discovered blood in various parts of the home and alerted authorities.
Knox County Sheriffs said at the time that Hoffman, an unemployed tree trimmer, gave them information that led to the discovery of the bodies.
