The Nets are mired in another listless season of bad basketball. Their new owner, Mikhail D. Prokhorov, who projected his swagger in billboards and press conferences last spring, has faded into the background as his team has faded in the standings.
Charisma, it seems, could only carry the Nets so far. And that anticipated rivalry with the Knicks — which was supposed to be stoked by that Midtown billboard — will have to wait another year.

The Knicks are 16-10 and celebrating a happy revival with their new star, Amar’e Stoudemire. The Nets are 6-19 and still searching for a comparable savior. The best they can do for now is generate intrigue.
The Nets fueled a speculative frenzy Wednesday when they made a deal to acquire a pair of first-round draft picks — two more chips to use in a potential blockbuster trade, presumably one involving Carmelo Anthony, the discontented Denver Nuggets star.
