Antonio Valente Filho, Chief of Police in Timon, Maranhao state, told Globo TV's G1 website that the brothers, ages 18 and 21, have confessed to the crime, which took place on December 29.
The pair apparently claimed their father, an Afro-Brazilian religious leader, was a violent man who drank too much and didn't accept their homosexuality.
A post mortem said the victim died underground of asphyxiation.
Mr Filho said the brothers might also have been seeking control of the religious grounds and congregation.
