NYS Unemployment Extensions - On Friday U.S. President Obama signed a new law to cut taxes. A thirteen month extension is included in the new legislation, allowing more time to apply for extended unemployment benefits. The bad news is that this will not help everyone who is currently out of a job.

If you live in a state where the unemployment rate is getting better, then the new law prohibits you from receiving jobless benefits longer than someone living in a state with worse unemployment rates.

In a nutshell here is the new plan. After exhausting 26 weeks of state funded benefits, you then switch over to the Federal program. The Federal benefits last up to 53 weeks, then another 20 weeks of extensions.The maximum limit will be 99 weeks.

In all $40 million will go out to around 124,000 people in New York. If you already have 93 weeks of checks, then you will be unable to get another extension.

New York City unemployment was down, coming in at 9.1 percent in November, 2010. Previously it was as high as 10.5 percent last year.

Man Hits Teen on Plane Over iPhone - Police say a man on a Southwest Airlines flight from Las Vegas punched a teenager who refused to turn off his iPhone as the plane approached the Boise airport. Officers arrested 68-year-old Russell E. Miller, of Boise, on suspicion of misdemeanor battery Tuesday. He has been released from jail on bond. Witnesses told police the 15-year-old was playing games and listening to music on his cell phone when flight attendants instructed passengers to turn off their electronic devices because the plane was landing. Witnesses told police that when the teen didn't respond, Miller got angry and punched the boy in the arm. Miller says he "tapped" the teen on the shoulder after he refused to turn off the phone. Contactless Debit Cards - Contactless debit cards will make their formal debut in Canada next year with the launch of Interac Flash from Acxsys Corp.’s Interac Association, Canada’s national debit network. Interac’s first two Flash issuers are Scotiabank and RBC Royal Bank, which will roll out their first contactless cards next summer. The first acquirer is TD Merchant Services, a unit of Toronto-Dominion Bank. More issuers and acquirers are on the way, an Interac spokesperson tells Digital Transactions News, though no announcements have been made yet. Interac and the banks tested Flash this summer at some high-volume, small-ticket merchants in downtown Toronto.
