An hour later, however, the Indianapolis Star reported that Wilson will be named Indiana coach at a 4 p.m. press conference. The Hoosier players are expected to be informed at 3 p.m.
Wilson flew from Norman to Indianapolis to meet with Indiana officials, including athletic director Fred Glass, and is believed to be the leading candidate for the job.
Indiana, however, is yet to announce a press conference or made an official announcement about its coaching search to replace Bill Lynch, who was fired last week.
“I don’t think there’s any sense of rush, you know, both ways,” said Wilson, who got back to Norman about 5:40 in the evening.
Wilson, 49, has been OU’s offensive coordinator since 2006, and has been a Sooner assistant since 2002. His several ties to the Big Ten and Indiana have made him an attractive candidate for the Hoosiers, who have had only one winning season since 1994.
He was an offensive coordinator in the conference at Northwestern from 1999-2001 under Randy Walker. There, Wilson implemented the spread offense, and in 2000 the Wildcats were ninth in the country in scoring averaging 39 points a game, and shared the Big Ten crown with Michigan and Purdue.
