The area, known as The Block, is occupied by mostly strip clubs and historic theaters. The Sun reported that at least four buildings on the street were on fire.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, which likely spread due to high winds that hit the city.
A spokesperson with the local fire department said that the fire started at around 4 p.m. in a three-story building and from there, spread to several more, according to the Associated Press.
On a firefighter's union group's Twitter page at http://twitter.com/BCFDL734, the fire had reached five alarms.
“I haven't seen smoke like that before. From three blocks away, it was just black,” Alex LeBlanc Trela, an consultant who works near the fire, told AP.
