Jogging for example is very harsh on the joints. Especially if you are overweight. It stress the knees and ankles with every stride. It is even worse if you are running on concrete as it doesn't absorb any of the pressure.
The best low impact exercises are ones where the body does not have to support it's own weight while exercising. Rowing is a good one. It works out the upper body and has minimal impact on the joints.
Using a exercise bike or a cross trainer machine has little to no impact on the joints.
