Christian Bale took the night's first award, for best supporting actor in The Fighter, the story of a Massachusetts boxer and his family and their effort to win a championship. The Fighter is also up for five other awards, including best picture, at the 68th annual Globes, the prizes for film and TV handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Bale accepted the award, joking that he never really knew much about the HFPA "and now I realize how perceptive they are."
