Atheist Ads Attack 'Scams' Religions

Atheist Ads Attack 'Scams' Religions - A new advertisement in Alabama by a national atheist group is reportedly declaring religions to be "scams." The Huntsville ad -- produced by the American Atheists -- displays the message "You know they're all scams" alongside pictures of religious symbols, such as Islam's crescent moon and star, the cross and the Jewish star, according to the Christian Post. Anesthesia More like Coma than Sleep

Anesthesia More like Coma than Sleep - Anesthesia induces a brain state that more closely resembles a controlled, reversible coma than sleep, according to a new study. "General anesthesia is pharmacological coma, not sleep," Dr. Nicholas D. Schiff, co-author of the study and the director of the laboratory of cognitive neuromodulation with Weil Cornell Medical College in New York, told Reuters. In a review article in the New England Journal of Medicine on Dec. 30, Schiff and his colleagues compared clinical signs and electroencephalogram readings of patients under general anesthesia and those simply dozing. Anesthesia More like Coma than Sleep While doctors and their patients often refer to anesthesia as going to sleep, in reality the two states have little in common, the researchers said, with only the deepest phase of sleep and the lightest phase of anesthesia overlapping. In normal sleep, the brain cycles through various predictable phases, while under anesthesia

Blu-Ray 3D TV Adoption

Blu-Ray 3D TV Adoption - Remember the videotape format war between VHS and Betamax in the 1970s and '80s? When wide adoption of a new consumer packaged-media format is at stake, format launches aren't always smooth. Blu-ray Disc is the latest example. It struggled out of the gate in 2006 while engaged in a fierce battle with HD DVD to become the high-def format of choice, a contest it won in 2008 when HD DVD conceded and manufacturers ceased production. Now, just a year after its introduction at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, 3D Blu-ray is leading the charge to bring 3D TV -- the next frontier for packaged media -- into the home. There are roughly 30 3D movie titles currently in retail stores (with more on the way), and players have been created by leading consumer electronics manufacturers including LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Vizio. Industrywide agreement was key to the success of a 3D format launch, according to Andy Parsons, U.S. chairman of the

Gwyneth Paltrow Cee-lo Duet

Gwyneth Paltrow Cee-lo Duet - NBC has announced that Gwyneth Paltrow will be hosting Saturday Night Live on Jan. 15 with musical guest Cee Lo Green. It sounds like a good show, but my question is this: Since Gwyneth Paltrow sang a fantastic version of Cee Lo's "F*** You" on Glee this season, is there a chance the two will sing it together? David Hasselhoff Fancied Pamela Anderson

David Hasselhoff Fancied Pamela Anderson - Hasselhoff said yesterday that he and Anderson could have been a couple during their time on the hit TV series but their respective partners kept them apart. "We are close but I would love to have been closer to her," Hasselhoff told the Daily Telegraph. "But she was always running and I was always running. I was always married and she was always hanging out with Tommy Lee." David Hasselhoff Fancied Pamela Anderson He described Anderson as "very funny" and "very sweet" and said the pair had always been attracted to one another. Hasselhoff also named Alexandra Paul, who played Stephanie Holden, as his favourite Baywatch character because she was the "epitome of a lifeguard". Alec Baldwin Talks About Running For Office

Alec Baldwin Talks About Running For Office - Senator Jack Donaghy? Perhaps, as 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin tells CNN’s Eliot Spitzer he’s “very interested” in running for office. The trick, Baldwin says in an exclusive interview that airs Wednesday on Parker Spitzer, is that running would mean the “extremely painful” decision to leave acting, where he’s at the top of his game. Also, Baldwin says he doesn’t want to live anywhere but New York, and the city’s got no shortage of ambitious would-be political superstars. Court Drops NYPD Blue Nudity Fine

Court Drops NYPD Blue Nudity Fine - A federal appeals court threw out a $1.21 million penalty against 44 ABC television stations for violating broadcast indecency standards by airing an "NYPD Blue" episode that showed a woman's nude buttocks. Tuesday's decision followed the New York court's ruling last July that the indecency policy under which the U.S. Federal Communications Commission had assessed the penalty was unconstitutionally vague. The FCC had imposed in February 2008 a $27,500 fine against each of the 44 ABC affiliates for showing the "NYPD Blue" episode five years earlier. Walt Disney Co owns ABC. Court Drops NYPD Blue Nudity Fine "We are extremely gratified at the court's clearly correct ruling," said Seth Waxman, a partner at law firm WilmerHale and former U.S. solicitor general, who represents ABC. Austin Schlick, the FCC general counsel, in a statement said Tuesday's decision confirms that the earlier ruling wa

Thieves Tunnel into Bank

Thieves Tunnel into Bank - In a heist that seems ripped from a Hollywood movie, thieves in Argentina tunneled into a bank on New Year's Eve, looting some 140 safe deposit boxes from the vault. The bank robbers entered the vault of a branch of Banco Provincia in Buenos Aires through a 100-foot tunnel that connected to a nearby building, authorities said. The tunnel reportedly included ventilation, lighting, even carpeting. Thieves Tunnel into Bank At least three thieves snuck through the tunnel on New Year's Eve while the bank was closed, and spent the weekend collecting their loot, authorities said. Bank security cameras reportedly recorded images of the suspects leaving with money and other stolen property, lifted from roughly 10 percent of the bank's safety deposit boxes. "It was a really impressive job," said prosecutor Martin Niklison. The bank itself doesn't even know the true value of the lost property, as customers don't have to declare t

More Birds Fall from Sky

More Birds Fall from Sky - Hundreds of birds began falling from the sky, this time in Louisiana, littering a quarter-mile stretch of roadway in Pointe Coupee Parish on Monday. The birds were already dead or dying when they hit the ground. This avian death en masse follows a similar incident in Beebe, Ark., just three days ago, when more than 3,000 blackbirds fell almost simultaneously from the sky. Necropsies of those birds revealed that they died from blood clots caused by internal injuries. The birds reportedly landed in Pointe Coupee Parish lying face down, together in groups, or on their back with wings and legs rigidly pointing upwards. In Louisiana, biologists working with the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are busy collecting the corpses from Pointe Coupee Parish for testing. According to the U.S Geological Survey, there are records of at least 16 instances in the past 30 years involving more than 1,000 blackbirds dying unexpectedly. Source: http://www.the33

Rich Rodriguez Fired

Rich Rodriguez Fired - So it looks like the inevitable parting between Rich Rodriguez and Michigan has come to pass. And now the inevitable question: Why not Rodriguez to Pittsburgh? The Panthers need a coach, and a big name would help them erase the turmoil of the past month. Rodriguez needs a job, and he certainly knows the area and the Big East. They may be former rivals (Pittsburgh did ruin Rodriguez's chance to play for the national title at West Virginia in his final game, after all), but this is a marriage that could benefit both parties. Rich Rodriguez Fired Plenty of people see the wisdom of it, from CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd to our own Ryan McGee. Pitt fans complained over and over about Dave Wannstedt's stale offenses. Rodriguez would fix that in a hurry, though he'd have to adjust to the personnel available. Pat White isn't walking through the Heinz Field door next season. There is the whole rivalry thing. Rodriguez coached and played at Wes

NY Blizzard Bosses Beer

NY Blizzard Bosses Beer - Did four bosses buy beer during the NYC snow disaster rather than clear away the massive piles of white stuff? On Sunday New York launched an investigation into reports that four sanitation bosses actually sat in the cars drinking beer instead of clearing away the blizzard’s aftermath. The New York Post published an article that said that the four sanitation supervisors actually sat in their cars for hours last Monday night while they were assigned to clear away the NYC snow. If this is true, it is completely unacceptable. It makes little sense that they would do something like this? People throughout the city were counting on them to clear the roads – people’s lives and safety were at risk in New York City. NY Blizzard Bosses Beer This is just the latest criticism that the New York City Department of Sanitation is dealing with over its handling of the massive blizzard that literally shut down the city last week. There are even rumors that supervisors d

110 Year Old Finds Wife

110 Year Old Finds Wife - As the saying nearly goes about a significant relationship age gap: when he's 120, she'll only be 92. Proof that romance isn't dead, it was merely resting (for at least 16 hours a day) reaches us from the far-flung climes of Malaysia. Ahmad Mohamad Isa, a sprightly 110-year-old, who has 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, told Malay-language newspaper Utusan Malaysia that he is looking for his sixth wife after declaring that he was ready to marry again. Luckily for him, the 82-year-old Sanah Ahmad was reading. The widow of 30 years and mother of nine was willing to take the plunge and asked her children to contact Ahmad's family to make the necessary arrangements. 110 Year Old Finds Wife "It doesn't matter who she is, as long as she can cook for me," Ahmad told the paper, risking the wrath of a readership who may accuse him of old-fashioned sexism. He went on to express his happiness and surprise at Sanah's acc

Obama Prayer Inquiry

Obama Prayer Inquiry - A prison officer has been suspended for highlighting a verse in a bible and jokingly labelling it 'The Obama Prayer', it was revealed today. Sgt. Matthew Neu of Manatee County Jail in Florida circled a line from the book of Psalm: Chapter 109 Verse 8, which reads, 'Let his days be few; and let another take his office'. For many the slogan is a humorous way of expressing disapproval for the President. Sgt. Neu's colleagues at the Manatee County Central Jail facility in Palmetto, Florida, say it's a well known fact that Neu is not a fan of President Obama. Obama Prayer Inquiry But one of the sergeant's co-workers thought he had gone too far and reported his joke to the authorities. Oprah Fans Upset Pay for OWN

Oprah Fans Upset Pay for OWN - Oprah Winfrey's bold gamble on her OWN TV network debuted to mostly positive reviews and encouraging audience numbers at the weekend, winning over some cynics with its feel-good tone. But many stalwart Oprah fans expressed dismay that they could not receive the new OWN network without paying to upgrade their cable television packages, money that several said they could not afford. The OWN network, a joint venture between the influential talk show host and Discovery Communications that is aimed mostly at middle-aged women, made its debut on Saturday after three years of planning. According to preliminary Nielsen figures, OWN was watched by an average one million Americans in prime time on Saturday, and was the third biggest ad-supported cable network with women aged 25-54. Crocs Snakes Menace Flooded Australia City - Frogs, snakes, mice, spiders, crocodiles and likely other reptiles and amphibians are now too close for human comfort in Queensland, Australia, where recent severe floods transported these creatures in and around homes, according to reports in The Australian and other sources there. Residents of affected areas have been battling the floods for days now, with the problem impacting an area bigger than France and Germany combined. Barry Moessinger, who has lived in the low-lying Rockhampton suburb of Depot Hill for more than 50 years, told The Australian that he's been seeing up to 15 snakes a day over the past week. Americans in Denial About Diet

Americans in Denial About Diet - Who you calling fat? Well, I'm not fat, and you think that you're not fat either. Big-boned, of course. Full-figured, indeed. MSBC.COM reports that only four in 10 people said in Consumer Reports survey that they were "somewhat overweight. Eleven percent said they were very overweight or obese. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 68 percent of us are overweight or obese. And here's where the fat sizzles in the pan: Only one in 10 said they had an unhealthy diet. Americans in Denial About Diet "There does seem to be a disconnect," between reality and the answers most of us give when asked questions about our diet, how much exercise we get and our weight, said Molly Kimball, a registered dietitian at Ochshner's Elmwood Fitness Center in New Orleans. Part of the disconnect, Kimball said, comes from the way foods are marketed to us. "So many people think that what they're eating is h

'Huckleberry Finn' N-Word

'Huckleberry Finn' N-Word - A new version of Huckleberry Finn is being published -- one that omits the "n word." The NewSouth book, with an introduction by Twain scholar and Auburn University professor Alan Gribben, is designed to remove the offensive word that has kept the book out of some classrooms around the nation. It is replaced by the award "slave." (The new edition also replaces "injun.") I'm not big on censorship, but this word is so weighted that it gets in the way of a true discussion of the merits. but any teacher who assigns the new version should be required to explain the self-censorship. That way, at least, the tough prose won't be completely white-washed. 'Huckleberry Finn' N-Word "This is not an effort to render Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn colorblind," Gribben told Publishers Weekly. "Race matters in these books. Stanford Band Lebron

Stanford Band Lebron - In a move as weak as the college bowl system itself, Orange Bowl officials have announced that the Stanford Band will not be allowed to perform at halftime of the Orange Bowl. So it’s come to this: the band is being punished for something it might do. And speculation is that it’s all to protect LeBron James. While I’ve seen no official statement from the Orange Bowl, I do know that Stanford’s planned halftime performance is entitled “Recent Events in the Pro Sports World in Miami.” That can mean only one thing; a devastating satirical takedown of the Marlins’ Dan Uggla LeBron James. Hilarity was sure to ensue, until Dean Wormer stepped in and invoked double secret probation. Stanford Band Lebron We all know of what the Stanford Band is capable. In the scheme of college bands, it’s George Carlin in a world of Lawrence Welks. Devilishly raucous and often over the top, the Stanford Band has the courage to ditch the big hats and speak truth to power … somethin

How to get by with One-Car Family

How to get by with One-Car Family - Sit down together and take a close look at your family schedule. In order to eliminate a vehicle, you'll need to know where everybody needs to be on a regular basis and when they need to be there. Though there may be overlaps that seem insurmountable, don't automatically discard the idea of becoming a one-car family. There may be solutions you've overlooked. Adjust working hours if you have some flexibility to do so. Maybe you can go to work a little bit later in the morning or your spouse can stay later. These slight adjustments may mean that one of you can be dropped off and picked up at work by the other. By the same token, explore the possibility that you may be able to use a company car if you only need transportation to, from and for your job. How to get by with One-Car Family Look at public transportation options. Although not all areas offer good and reliable public transportation, many larger cities have some sort of trans

Ohio Boy Charged Killing Mother

Ohio Boy Charged Killing Mother - A 10-year-old boy was charged as a juvenile with murder in the fatal shooting of his mother after authorities said he told a neighbor about the killing. The boy appeared Monday in a Holmes County courtroom with his attorney, who entered the juvenile equivalent of a not guilty plea. A judge ordered that the boy remain in Richland County Juvenile Detention as authorities investigate the shooting. Among a group of overweight and obese adults enrolled in a diet and exercise program, those who took omega-3 fatty acids didn't lose any more weight than those given placebo capsules, Dr. Laura F. DeFina of The Cooper Institute in Dallas and her colleagues found. Will Fish Oil Accelerate Weight Loss? There is evidence from animal studies that omega-3 fatty acids promote weight loss, DeFina and her team note, while studies in people have had mixed results. Because fish oil has many other potential health benefits, including cutting cholesterol, improving insulin sensitivity, and reducing blood pressure, "weight-loss programs associated with the use of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids seemed appropriate," they write. However, according to Nazon, there is still hope that the romance will be rekindled in the new year. “Courtney being the Gemini and David being the Virgo, there's bound to have something simmering in there but he's bound to have some strange happenings and in his chart it suggests that he likes it a little weird and funky on the sexual side,” Nazon said. “But I feel that they can still bring it back together. Straighten your Hair without Damaging it

Straighten your Hair without Damaging it - Brush out hair before taking a shower. Get all the knots out of that super-thick hair of yours. Wash your hair with a normal amount of shampoo, maybe a tablespoon, and use it mainly on your scalp to cleanse and get rid of grease/residue. Use a less then the usual amount of conditioner so you don't make your scalp greasy. Work it through your hair, from the scalp to tips of strands. Rinse it out with cold water. This helps to smooth the follicles. Gather your hair and gently wring out the excess water over the sink. Comb, never brush, your hair to get tangles out. Take a round brush that has some hold, or grip to it, and start blow drying. Always use the medium or low (never high) heat setting, but the air flow setting can be turned up to high or whatever you like, if you have those options. Section off your hair (horizontally of course) and begin with the hair at the back of your neck and work up to the crown of your head. Part hair

Would you Invest in Facebook

Would you Invest in Facebook - In the old days (the 1990s), small companies could sell their stock in the public markets at reasonable cost, just like big companies. This allowed smaller, more speculative companies to raise money, and it gave investors who liked to invest in smaller, more speculative companies more opportunities to consider. In those days, investors who liked speculating on risky tech companies had plenty to choose from. Risky tech companies, meanwhile, could raise capital easily to fund their growth. Would you Invest in Facebook And how did both sides do? Well, sometimes these speculative bets worked out (Cisco, Amazon, Netscape, Yahoo, et al). Sometimes they didn't (hundreds of other companies that seemed like a good idea at the time). But both sides understood--or should have understood--the risks involved, and the market facilitated the free flow of capital and served both constituencies. But then, in an effort to protect investors from fraud (which

American Airlines Online Travel

American Airlines Online Travel - Expedia, the world's largest online travel company, will no longer list American Airlines flights on its website, lobbing the latest volley in a battle between the airline and some Web-based travel companies that could have a ripple effect on consumers. Expedia stopped listing American's flights as of Jan. 1, after the two sides failed to resolve a dispute about a booking system that American prefers and that provides more information about services it offers for a fee, such as priority boarding. American's fares are no longer available on Expedia-owned sites including Hotwire and TripAdvisor, but American flights remain on Expedia's corporate travel site, Egencia. American Airlines Online Travel Expedia became the second major site in recent days to stop listing American flights. Delta stripped its fares from three smaller travel sites last month in an attempt to steer consumers to its own website and build brand loyalty. Th

This decrease follows two million years of growth of the human cranium. Our Brains Are Shrinking. Are We Getting Dumber? "Over the past 20,000 years, the average volume of the human male brain has decreased from 1,500 cubic centimetres to 1,350 cubic centimetres, losing a chunk the size of a tennis ball," according to a Daily Mail report quoting Kathleen McAuliffe in Discover magazine. "The female brain has shrunk by about the same proportion." McAuliffe reported the comments made by John Hawks, anthropologist from the University of Wisconsin , who argues that the fact the size of the human brain is decreasing doesn't

Pros Cons of City vs Small Town Living

Pros Cons of City vs Small Town Living - When choosing a location for home, the area is key to longstanding happiness. If you are a more laid back type of person with a great love for the "simple life", then a suburban neighborhood would be best for your lifestyle. An area where everyone knows your name and a driving license is never required to identity validation. However, for those who enjoy exciting night life and other entertainment options, then the city life might be more beneficial. Let's evaluate all of the pros and cons of each environment. Pros Cons of City vs Small Town Living You may be surprised to hear that a suburb was defined for many years as a neighborhood on the outskirts of a large city.
