Westboro Baptist Church

Westboro Baptist Church - The father of fallen Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, whose funeral was picketed by a radical Kansas church group, has been ordered to pay the protesters' court costs. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court ruling, and ordered Albert Snyder to pay more than $16,000 to the leader of Westboro Baptist Church. Snyder had filed suit against the group for demonstrating at his son's funeral in 2006. The Topeka church frequently pickets military funerals, carrying signs that say "Thank God for dead soldiers," as well as protesting homosexuality. The Supreme Court will hear the case next term to decide whether the right to picket funerals is protected, or is limited by the privacy and religious rights of the mourners. Westboro Baptist Church

Matthew Snyder

Matthew Snyder - "By the court making this decision, they're not only telling me that they're taking their side, but I have to pay them money to do this to more soldiers and their families," said Albert Snyder, whose son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, was killed in action in Iraq in 2006. Members of the fundamentalist church based in Topeka, Kansas, appeared outside Snyder's funeral in 2006 in Westminster, Maryland, carrying signs reading "You're going to hell," "God hates you" and "Thank God for dead soldiers." Among the teachings of the church, which was founded in 1955 by pastor Fred Phelps, is the belief that God is punishing the United States for "the sin of homosexuality" through events such as soldiers' deaths. Shroud Of Turin

Shroud Of Turin - AMERICAN computer graphic artists using cutting edge technology have recreated the face of Jesus based on the Shroud of Turin. It took a team from Studio MacBeth six months to create the image using the fabric many believe to be Jesus’ burial cloth, as the blueprint, The Christian Post reported. “If you want to recreate the face of Jesus and you want to get the actual face of Jesus, you have only one object and that’s the Shroud,” said computer artist Ray Downing. “It is the only object that can actually purport to be the actual image of Jesus with any kind of credibility whatsoever.” But the Shroud of Turin is not without controversy. Though many believe it is the cloth used to wrap the body of Jesus after his death, others assert that the shroud is from the medieval period and is not the precious relic that some claim. Lee Najjar

Lee Najjar - Today on an interview with a Jacksonville TV station WJXX-TV, Kim Zolciak says she’s “in a good place” with Big Papa, her nickname for her boyfriend Lee Najjar. The pair have been on and off the past year. She also said the new sixth housewife on “Real Housewives of Atlanta” season three, which starts shooting this month, is “an attorney” but wouldn’t say the name. Based on the list of women who have been rumored to be trying out for the show, the only attorney is Phaedra Parks, who specializes in entertainment. Phaedra is an actual housewife. She got married last November to Apollo Nida and “Housewives” semi-regular Dwight Eubanks was the wedding planner, according to the Straight From the A blog. Lee Najjar

Jaime Escalante

Jaime Escalante - The California maths teacher who inspired the film Stand And Deliver, Jaime Escalante, has died aged 79. Escalante, a Bolivian immigrant, transformed a tough high school in Los Angeles by motivating struggling students to excel at maths and science. The school had more students studying advanced calculus than all but three other state schools in the US. Escalante died in Reno, Nevada, where he was undergoing treatment for bladder cancer, AP news agency reported. Edward James Olmos played Escalante in the 1988 film Stand And Deliver. Olmos said Escalante had proved that inner city students were able to perform at the highest level, and left an important legacy for American education, AP said. Jaime Escalante

Erik Menendez

Erik Menendez - How many of us remember Erik Menendez? Probably very less because he had hit the headlines when many of the readers were in their nursery classes! So a quick recap of the incident that made Erik Menendez notorious! Erik Galen Menendez and Joseph Lyle Menendez are two brothers who did the hideous crime of murdering their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez, residents of Beverly Hills, California, on 20th August 1989 by shotgun. Both Joseph and Erik were sentenced of lifetime imprisonment and are expected to remain in prison cell till the last day of their life. Erik is reported to be working as a night caretaker and shares a 6-by-9-foot cell with another prisoner! Kayla Narey

Kayla Narey - Nine teens have been charged after police found a connection between them and the suicide of Phoebe Prince, bullying victim in January 14th. Charges vary between harassment and statuory rape. The announcement was made by District Attorney Elizabeth D. Scheibel. Phoebe Prince was a 15-year-old student from Ireland, and she was found hanged in her home after weeks of bullying in school and even in her Facebook account. “It appears that Phoebe’s death on Jan. 14 followed a torturous day for her, in which she was subjected to verbal harassment and threatened physical abuse,” said Scheibel. Phoebe Prince

Phoebe Prince - The charging of nine teenagers in the tragic suicide of Irish student Phoebe Prince in South Hadley Massachusetts is no more than what they deserved. Yet the failure to charge any adults at the school with at least negligence in her case is puzzling. The heartbreaking evidence released by the prosecutor shows that adult supervisors witnessed and did nothing about the extreme bullying the 15-year-old girl underwent on her last days on earth. That included heavy bullying in the library before a supervisor who did absolutely nothing to stop it or report it. The entire school leadership, given that there were previous incidents of bad bullying at the school, deserves to be reprimanded and in some cases sacked over this tragic episode. One can make no excuse for adults who watched and did nothing while a young girl was bullied to death hanging herself in a closet when it all became too much for her. Her crime was being asked out on a date by a popular high school football p

Mcdonald's All American

Mcdonald's All American - Jereme Richmond didn't win the slam dunk competition, but in typical Richmond fashion, he managed to have a say in who did. Richmond scored 124 points (out of a possible 140) in the first round but was one point shy of making the final round of the McDonald's All-American game's slam dunk competition Monday night at Ohio State's Value City Arena. The event was won by Richmond's friend Josh Selby, a 6-foot-3 guard from Baltimore Lake Clifton. "Jereme Richmond told me my first dunk had to be my best dunk," Selby said. Richmond went with the competition's most common dunk. He threw the ball up and off the ground in both attempts, catching it with one hand for a tomahawk jam and a score of 64 on his first try. "It's all in fun," Richmond said. "Win or lose, doesn't matter. I was glad for Josh, though. I met him through AAU, and we've been friends for a while. He's a guy I can relate to off the c

Ethan Peck

Ethan Peck - Last we saw Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona on "10 Things I Hate About You," she was climbing on to the back of his bike in a very sweet -- and pretty hot -- stand-by-your-man (even if you're not ready to admit he's your man) kind of moment. In the clip below, Korbi TV asks Lindsey Shaw (Kat) and Ethan Peck (Patrick) if their characters are now ready to give in to their feelings for one another. "Our feelings will grow, despite our [efforts in] fighting them," Peck says. So they're still fighting them?! Apparently so, but the actors also say it's all getting more complicated and involved. In a good way. "It only gets deeper and funnier and just more real, really," Shaw shares. "The most fun for me about this second half [of Season 1] has been really just getting to know each other better as people." Watch the video for more on that, as well as what's up with Kat's sister Bianca and her pops, played by the ge

Sylvester James

Sylvester James - *TV One’s series “UnSung” reveals the life of a ’70s Disco Queen tonight. While the names Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor might come to mind, it’s singer Sylvester that’s the focus of the upcoming episode. Sylvester James’ journey to fame and tragedy began when he left his Los Angeles home at age 16 and headed straight to San Francisco. The singer launched his career just a few years later in 1967, joining music productions, teaming for a short stint in a group of transvestite performance artists (The Cockettes), and picking up a following as a popular nightclub singer in the 70s. After a flock of labels, bands, and trios, Sylvester formed a group with future Weather Girls Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes. His hit, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” became a disco classic. Tragedy struck in the 1980s for the singer. As he watched close friends die from AIDS complications, he too was diagnosed with the HIV virus and died in 1988. Although Sylvester’s hit “You Make Me Feel” w

Knight And Day

Knight And Day - Directed by James Mangold (WALK THE LINE, GIRL INTERRUPTED) and written by actor Patrick O'Neill, this tale of a couple's dangerous adventure is slated to open at the end of June, right before the holiday weekend. Tom Cruise's first role since his Nazi disaster, VALKYRIE, seems to be following his MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE success -- and adding the always sexy Cameron Diaz to the mix makes for a very intriguing film duo. What do you think about this trailer? Does it look like a blockbuster is brimming . . . or another lukewarm Cruise flick? Has Tom's hijinks in the outside world made his Hollywood star dim at all? Clearly, he's got something left to give--he's got seven or eight films in development and never seems to go a year without putting up another full-scale Hollywood event, for better or worse.

Kristin Gustafson

Kristin Gustafson - Kristin Gustafson was your 2009 Hometown Hotties Winner, but she’s a winner in any year. The best part is Kristin is from California. She’s 5′8, 125, and works as a Leasing Consultant “Piercings/Tattoos (How many? Where?): Piercings…not so much. I’m boring with those, just my ears. Tattoos I have 2; 1 on my wrist and the dreaded lower back tat…but I make mine look good.” Notable quotes? “Every girl has at one time has told a little white lie…used the eyelash flutter or the cleavage over the counter move at least once in their life… or telling people at a restaurant it’s your birthday…works every time!” But the best part? “I can flex my [cleavage] to the beat of any song. I can also touch the tip of my tongue to the bottom of my nose…Mom and Dad are proud.”

Elgin Park

Elgin Park - You may not have heard the name “Michael Paul Smith”, but people over internet are searching for the “Elgin Park” fanatically, because it is the model society a very small town you may not find on the map of the United States, but for Smith it is a place of his dreams, where he lives days. It would be perfect to say that for Michael Paul Smith “Elgin Park is the reality of Fantasy”. Recently ABC Network discovered the story behind Elgin Park, when they meet up with the creature of this miniature society. Talking to ACB Network, Smith said, People have forgot that how colorful the past was, while taking a snap of miniature city Elgin Park, Pennsylvania. The model miniature town has been created by Smit himself using the old model cars and building that are homemade. It was his passion, greed to see the colorful past, even in pictures, so he decided to take lifelike photographs of the miniature “Elgin Park”, with his $75 digital camera, but the miniature town went viral whe

Dennis Hopper

Dennis Hopper - A frail but smiling Dennis Hopper was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, belying reports that the "Easy Rider" actor was on his deathbed. Hopper, 73, has advanced prostate cancer and was said in court documents this week to have dropped to about 100 pounds (45 kg) in weight and to be too weak to continue chemotherapy. Hopper wore a bandage on his head and on his right hand at the ceremony. He attributed them to injuries he suffered in a fall after a paparazzi called out his name as he walked outside. "I thought I recognized the voice, so I kept walking and turned around but I didn't see the little ridgeline in the road and I took a terrible fall because I have no muscle," the actor told reporters. "So I fell directly on my face, and I had my glasses in my hand. I got pretty screwed up," he said. Hopper, who began his career in the 1955 teenage rebellion film "Rebel Without a Cause" with James Dean, is emb

Palm Sunday 2010

Palm Sunday 2010 - Hundreds of Christians from around the world marched from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem to mark Palm Sunday, retracing the steps of Jesus 2,000 years ago. The pilgrims waved national and church flags and followed a white donkey, which according to Christian tradition was the way Jesus entered the holy city. A few dozen Israeli police stood by, a small fraction of the forces on duty in recent weeks because of Palestinian unrest. There were no incidents in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. "I see the problems here as a part of the trip, just showing the extremes of this God-drenched city," said Jane Voigts, a pastor from San Luis Obispo, California. "I've really seen more grace and hope amidst the suffering here." In past weeks, Palestinian demonstrations followed disclosure of Israeli plans to build apartments in east Jerusalem, as well as rededication of an ancient synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. Earth Hour 2010

Earth Hour 2010 - Europe’s best known landmarks — including the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and Rome’s Colosseum — fell dark Saturday, following Sydney’s Opera House and Beijing’s Forbidden City in joining a global climate change protest, as lights were switched off across the world to mark the Earth Hour event. In the United States, the lights went out at the Empire State Building in New York, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta, among many other sites in the Eastern time zone. Millions were expected to turn off lights and appliances for an hour from 8:30 p.m. in a gesture to highlight environmental concerns and to call for a binding pact to cut greenhouse gas emissions. This year’s was the fourth annual Earth Hour, organized by the World Wildlife Fund. “I think it’s great to see that hundreds of millions of people share this common value of lowering our carbon footprint,” said Dan Forman, a spokesman for WWF in Washington. Some 4,000 citie

Elgin Park, Pennsylvania

Elgin Park, Pennsylvania - I discovered the small (very small) town of “Elgin Park” the same way millions of others around the world have: someone forwarded me a link to a Flickr slide show. The subject line was “Cars of the past … real or models?” The photos were of models, all right, but they appeared so much more lifelike than any dioramas I’d seen before. I felt as if I was looking at a movie that was expressed in stills. I would soon learn that my view of Michael Paul Smith’s photos of this imaginary town was one of about 20 million — so far. I wrote about Mr. Smith and his scaled-down town for the Sunday Automobiles section. While this may seem like the story of a car enthusiast, Mr. Smith defies that label. He is an artist, not a car nut. He loves the aesthetics of American cars from decades past, but he doesn’t seem to care what engines they had. Elgin Park is really about a sense of home, not about the cars, which are simply the actors in the scenes. Mr. Smith is the casting

Nada Prouty To Restore Reputation

Nada Prouty To Restore Reputation - She worked inside Yemen in 2000 after terrorists bombed the USS Cole, killing 17 American sailors. She helped nab Zayd Hassan Safarani for a 1986 hijacking in Pakistan that killed 22 passengers. And she spearheaded the investigation into the 2002 assassination of USAID diplomat Laurence Foley in Jordan. But today, the 40-year-old former Taylor woman says she is unemployed, shunned by neighbors and regretting that she pleaded guilty in 2007 to federal charges that caused her to forfeit her citizenship and be branded as a Hizballah mole. The feds found out about her while investigating her brother-in-law, prominent Detroit-area restaurateur Talal Chahine, on tax evasion charges. "It makes me sick that anyone would think I would do anything to harm the United States," said Prouty, a Lebanese immigrant who is going public to try to clear her name. and regain her citizenship. CBS's "60 Minutes" aired a segment on her tonight. The

Health Care Reform Bill

Health Care Reform Bill - Sunday, a day that will live in infamy. The House is set to vote on the health care reform bill on Sunday afternoon/evening. During the Hank Paulson bailout spending bill that was pushed through under the disguise of a troubled asset relief program, but later ended up being nothing more than a handout to the largest Wall street firms. I wrote, faxed, and sent emails to Congress urging them to stop the bailout bill. Washington was overrun by a massive load of opposition to the bill with some reports placing the opposition at 300 to 1. Yes, 300 opposed for every single individual who was in favor of it. Phone systems were overrun, email servers crashed under the load, and fax machines were even turned off in some cases because they were being inundated with messages from their constituents. And here we are yet again. The communications director for the House of Representatives reports that the telephone systems have been overwhelmed, email systems bogged down, a

Bracket Predictions

Bracket Predictions - Well, Kentucky has been living a charmed life all season long. I suppose it only makes sense that they are given one of the easiest roads to the Final Four of any No. 1 seed. My March Madness bracket prediction for the East Region: a whole lot of people with their face buried squarely in the lap of John Wall, John Calipari and the rest of the Kentucky Nation. But what they don’t realize (and I’ll come back to this with another story tomorrow) is that Kentucky doesn’t have a chance in hell in cutting down the nets and winning the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats share a bracket with precisely zero other teams that have a shot at a national championship and, realistically, only two other teams (Wisconsin, West Virginia) that have a prayer at Final Four run. Other than that this bracket has a lot of parity and a lot of coin-flip games in the first two rounds that could lead to endless permutations in the region. However, all of that parity is between mediocre teams. And

Tess Taylor, Pretty Wild

Tess Taylor, Pretty Wild - The latest family to get a reality show on E! is Andrea Arlington and her "pretty wild" daughters. But, if you're like me, you might be wondering: Who are these people? Why are they famous? And why should we care enough to watch their show? Well, here's the lowdown on the family, according to reports: Andrea Arlington, the mom, is a former model who has posed for Playboy. Tess Taylor, 19, who is described by E! as the oldest sister, is reportedly not really Andrea Arlington's daughter or the sibling of Alexis and Gabrielle. She is known as a party girl and works as a model. Alexis Neiers, 18, is the family member who has made the most headlines. She was arrested on suspicion of burglarizing celebrity homes in a Hollywood burglary ring now known as the The Burglar Bunch. Gabrielle "Gabby" Neiers, 15, is the little sister who hasn't done anything scandalous -- yet. What do you think of this new E! family? I admit that I did

Digital TV Antenna

Digital TV Antenna - WGHP/Fox 8 will turn off its channel-8 digital transmitter on Monday, switching over permanently to its channel 35 transmitter. After last June's digital transition, WGHP found that many of its viewers could not pick up its digital VHF signal on channel 8, either because the signal was not strong enough or because many customers had the wrong type of antennas for VHF broadcasts. WGHP got "special temporary authority" from the Federal Communications Commission to run its signal on both channel 8 and UHF station channel 35 while it figured out whether it could boost the VHF signal or whether it would need to switch to UHF permanently. The station found that some customers, especially ones without outside antennas, could not pick up the VHF digital signal. The other stations in the market broadcast on UHF. "It certainly costs us more for electricity and maintenance (to run UHF)," said Ross Mason, the chief engineer at WGHP. "But when custo

ACC Tournament 2010 Bracket

ACC Tournament 2010 Bracket - The Big East Tournament will start on Tuesday, March 9th with the opening round. The men’s 2010 Big East Tournament Bracket is all set with #1 Syracuse being the favorite of the tournament. Normally there are more Big East teams that are confident in a NCAA tourney bid but this year it will be different. The 2010 Big East Tournament Bracket could make or break a team from making it to the big dance. For the teams from the Big East that already have a bid in the NCAA Tournament they can improve their seeding by performing well in the 2010 Big East Tournament. In my opinion the three best teams in the 2010 Big East Tournament Bracket are #1 ranked Syracuse, Villanova and West Virginia. The Big East Tournament is perhaps one of the strongest with so many talented teams. If you were a betting man you could assume that the Big East or the ACC will come away with the National Title this year. When you are betting on the 2010 Big East Tournament Bracket do not co
