Ann Curry Speech Gaffe

Ann Curry Speech Gaffe - “Today Show”’s host Ann Curry is in some hot water after forgetting to fact check a recent graduation address. She was invited to give the commencement address at Wheaton College in Massachusetts over the weekend. During her address, she told the students how fond she was of the programs that are offered at the school, and also went on to name some of their most famous alumni, including Billy Graham, Lesley Stahl, Wes Craven and Todd Beamer.

Unfortunately for Curry, Lesley Stahl attended a different Wheaton College that is located in Illinois. After she was made aware of the mistake, she wrote a letter or appology to the school.

“I am mortified by my mistake, and can only hope the purity of my motive, to find a way to connect with the graduates and to encourage them to a life of service, will allow you to forgive me,” Curry wrote to the school. She also went on to name a number of other Wheaton alumni that she could have mentioned in her commencement address that instead went unnamed. Sources at the college did not seem to think that it was that big of a deal, and said that she had done a “great job.”

Puerto Rico Earthquake 2010

Puerto Rico Earthquake 2010 - Christa von Hillebrandt, director of the Tsunami Warning Program, warned that the 5.8 earthquake in Puerto Rico that occurred in the morning is just a warning of major earthquake that will happen in Puerto Rico.

“What happened today is just a sign of activity on faults in the region of Puerto Rico The earth is saying I’m alive and I’m moving,” said the expert.

Von Hillebrandt said, according to the measuring instruments, the phenomenon spread to eight minutes even when a citizen’s perception was 10 to 15 seconds.

The expert explained that there has been only one reply directly related to the earthquake and it took four minutes following the main event and it was a magnitude 3.2 degrees on the Richter scale.

The major event that will possibly hit Puerto Rico, will be 8 degrees on the Richter scale, von Hillebrandt said. “Earthquakes are inevitable, unpredictable, but the damage is mitigated,” he said.

A study of Haiti after the quake, estimated that a total of 2,000 people may die on the island if it recorded an earthquake of 7.3 degrees. The most vulnerable structures are houses on stilts, the structures built on hillsides and tall buildings.

FBI 10 Most Wanted

FBI 10 Most Wanted - The FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List features criminals whose whereabouts are presently unknown. The FBI is offering rewards for information leading to the apprehension of the Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitives.

Usama (Osama?) Bin Laden still tops the list of the Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. In addition to Bin Laden are the following criminals: Eduardo Ravelo, Jason Derek Brown, James J. (Whitey) Bulger, Joe Luis Saenz, Robert William Fisher, Victor Manuel Gerena, Glen Stewart Godwin, Semion Mogilevich, and Alexis Flores.

The FBI's 10 Most Wanted List has hit the national news circuits in recent days regarding the search for James (Whitey) Bulger. The FBI has taken out advertisements in trade journals read by cosmetic surgeons in search of Bulger and his girlfriend. Since the girlfriend was known to have had prior cosmetic surgery, (breast implants)investigators assume she may try to have additional surgeries at some point in time; especially if she develops leaks in her implants, and also that Bulger may consider cosmetic surgery options as well. By advertising in these publications, the hope of the FBI is that a cosmetic surgeon may recognize them and turn them in.

I remember being fascinated by the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List when I was a little girl. My uncle was the postmaster of a little tiny town in northern Maine, and on occasion when I was visiting I would view the list and the wall filled with mug shots of all the criminals. I remember fabricating elaborate stories in my mind of where they might be hiding out. I guess when you're a kid visiting northern Maine and hanging out in a Post Office with your uncle, you do what you can to come up with some excitement!

Ohio Unemployment

Ohio Unemployment - Ohio’s unemployment compensation trust fund is broke and owes more than $2 billion to the federal government, yet the fund is losing tens of millions in revenue because the rate for part of the employers’ tax that supports it declined this year, a research organization reported.

“Ohio’s system for financing unemployment compensation is broken,” said Zach Schiller, research director for Policy Matters Ohio, the Cleveland-based organization that has been studying the trust fund’s problems.

The rate reduction came in what is called the “mutualized rate,” one of three factors included in establishing the unemployment tax rates levied on the first $9,000 in each employee’s earnings, Policy Matters Ohio said. The state uses the mutualized account to pay benefits to former employees of companies that have gone out of business.

That part of the employer’s tax declined this year by $18 per employee because federal stimulus funds Ohio received were put into that account, increasing the amount there and causing the applicable tax rate to fall.

Vitamin D For Healthy Bones

Vitamin D For Healthy Bones - High doses of vitamin D increase the number of falls and fractures in older women, say Australian researchers, who warn against using the vitamin in this way.

Geoff Nicholson, of Barwon Health and the University of Melbourne in Geelong, and colleagues investigated the impact of a single annual high-dose of oral vitamin D on older women.

"We expected to find a reduction in falls and fractures but we found exactly the opposite," says Professor Nicholson, whose findings appear today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Vitamin D is needed in order for the body to absorb calcium, necessary for healthy bones.

It also plays a role in keeping muscles strong, especially those around the limb girdles.

Professor Nicholson says while the Sun is a major source of the vitamin, indoor lifestyles and the advent of anti-skin cancer campaigns have contributed to low vitamin D levels.

"A good proportion of the population, particularly women who are older, have lower vitamin D levels than are considered healthy," he said.
