Man Returns Dog of Flanders 76 Years Later

Man Returns Dog of Flanders 76 Years Later - An Arizona man has returned a book he checked out of a Michigan library -- 76 years ago. Mark McKee was just 13 years old when he checked out a copy of "A Dog of Flanders" from a library in Mt. Clemens, Mich., MyFoxDetroit.com reports. The story, which details a young orphaned boy and his dog enduring difficult times during Christmas, was so touching that McKee kept the book for more than seven decades before returning it this month along with a letter. "I figure the fine for this book at 10 cents a day for 76 years, would be $2,774," McKee wrote. "As I am an old senior citizen on a fixed income, I can only throw myself upon the mercy of the library!" Man Returns Dog of Flanders 76 Years Later McKee, who spent time in Michigan as publisher of the Macomb Daily, told MyFoxDetroit.com that his conscience got the best of him and drove him to return the book, which was originally due on May 24, 1934. Michael Lohan: 'Lindsay is innocent'

Michael Lohan: 'Lindsay is innocent' - Lindsay Lohan's father Michael has defended his daughter over claims that she physically and verbally attacked a rehab employee. It was alleged that former Betty Ford technician Dawn Holland received a sprained wrist during a supposed altercation with the Mean Girls star, which occurred after she reportedly refused to be breathalysed. However, the actress's estranged father Michael has backed the 24-year-old's insistence that she was the real victim, stating that Holland had targeted Lohan since her first day of treatment. Michael Lohan: 'Lindsay is innocent' He told BANG Showbiz: "The woman who claims she was attacked in the house had it out for Lindsay since day one. She didn't want her to drive and didn't want to give her any passes to go out." Of suggestions that his daughter had stayed out partying beyond her curfew, Michael argued: "Lindsay had gone to get her hair done with two g

Lacey Turner Cried Like a Baby Eastenders Exit

Lacey Turner Cried Like a Baby Eastenders Exit - Lacey Turner has admitted she cried like a baby after her EastEnders’ exit. Turner’s exit came after six years with the show, so it’s definitely understandable why she would be left in tears. After awhile on the job, co-workers become more like family, and that surely is what happened with Lacey and the EastEnders cast. Lacey stated after her final shoot for the soap opera she cried like a baby on her way home and was inconsolable. Turner’s final episode will air on Christmas day, making for a truly dramatic event. EastEnders follows the lives of London’s East End Albert Square residents. Lacey played Stacey Branning. Speaking about her last episode, Turner said, "It was very sad. I did cry like a baby all the way home! Stacey's big Christmas storyline has little bits of everything she's done over the past six-and-a-half years.” Lacey Turner Cried Like a Baby Eastenders Exit Her fans are eager to see what is next fo

Laguna Beach Flooding

Laguna Beach Flooding - Laguna Beach city officials are hoping to reopen Coast Highway in downtown Laguna Beach by the peak rush hour Wednesday, police Lt. Jason Kravetz said. City workers are moving mud and debris off of a section of the highway between Broadway and Laguna Avenue which was inundated by mud and silt due to overnight flooding from Laguna Creek. After reopening the highway, officials will work to reopen Forest Avenue, Broadway, Ocean Avenue and Beach Street which have been closed since early Wednesday morning due to mud and high water. Last on the list is Laguna Canyon Road, Kravetz said. The canyon road is filled with abandoned vehicles, debris and downed trees from the storm and floodwaters. The city’s swift-water rescue team assisted 25 people who were caught behind the rushing waters of normally placid Laguna Creek in the early hours Wednesday, Kravetz said. No one was injured. Some of the rescues were from vehicles and others were from homes along the canyo

Larry Brown Steps Down

Larry Brown Steps Down - Paul Silas has reached agreement to take over as the Charlotte Bobcats coach for the rest of the season after Larry Brown resigned Wednesday. Former Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson also received strong consideration from Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, who listened to recommendations from Brown before deciding to hire Silas. Silas still lives in the Charlotte area and is a popular figure among the area’s pro basketball fans. He coached the Charlotte-New Orleans Hornets for 4½ seasons, reaching the playoffs four times. Larry Brown Steps Down Michael Jordan and Brown came to a “mutual decision,” Jordan said, to parts ways on Wednesday. The Bobcats have started the season with a disappointing 9-19 record, and Brown’s disenchantment with the job grew more obvious with every loss. Patrick Ewing, an Orlando Magic assistant coach, was also under consideration, sources said, but Jordan worried about putting his close friend in the difficult position of being

15th Amendment

15th Amendment - The federal judiciary has had a chip on its shoulder ever since Alexander Hamilton described it as the “weakest of the three departments of power.” From Marbury v. Madison and McCulloch v. Maryland through to its present day progeny, federal judges consistently misinterpret the Constitution and misinterpret the powers assigned to them therein. In fact, for decades the district courts, courts of appeal, and the Supreme Court have gone out of their way to show that they can obliterate the Constitution just as powerfully as their sister branches. One of the latest examples of the federal courts’ disregard for the black letter of Constitutional law is found in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision in the case of Gonzalez v. Arizona (2010). Handed down in October of this year, the reasoning set forth in the majority opinion written by Judge Sandra S. Ikuta is remarkably unsound, especially so in light of the concurrence of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O

Skype Outage

Skype Outage - Skype suffered a widespread and lengthy outage today with its internet calling service. The company said in a post that problems with the Skype network’s “supernodes” are responsible and could take hours more to fix. Skype apologized to users. But the lesson is clear, as GigaOm noted. If you rely as a business on cloud-based communications tools, it pays to have a backup. Skype spokesman PeterParkes said, “Skype isn’t a network like a conventional phone or IM network. It relies on millions of individual connections between computers and phones to keep things up and running.” That is, Skype uses a peer-to-peer model in order to connect callers. The supernodes are like phone directories for Skype, and a number of them failed today. As we speak, Skype isn’t loading for me right now. Lots of people are affected. Skype accounts for 0.57 percent of all internet traffic. For the first six months of 2010, Skype logged 88.4 billion minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls. Skype

Littlefield AZ Flooding

Littlefield AZ Flooding - Residents in northern Arizona are busy stacking sandbags and building dirt berms to control the flood waters that have swept away four homes in a retirement community. The Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire District Chief Jeff Hunt says none of the wood-framed homes was inhabited, although a man was getting ready to move into 1 of them. Hunt says about a dozen other homes in the two communities are still in danger of being destroyed by water that has washed away 200 feet of roadway. Forecasters say a northwestern Arizona weather station recorded at least 10 inches of rain Tuesday, while rainfall ranged from 10 to 14 inches in southwestern Utah. Emergency orders remain in place in some Utah, Nevada and Arizona counties. Littlefield AZ Flooding

Eglin Federal Credit Union

Eglin Federal Credit Union - Empower Federal Credit Union announces a $2.5 million ‘give-back’ for 2010. The credit union is paying $2.5 million in ‘give-back’ bonus dividends to reward Empower members for a successful year. John D. Wakefield, president/CEO of Empower, reports that Empower assets, loans, and net income increased significantly in 2010. According to Wakefield, credit unions are not-for-profit, so any excess profits are returned to the members in the form of better rates and service enhancements. “Despite a challenging economy, 2010 was a strong year for Empower, so we are paying our members a give-back dividend and interest rebate,” says Wakefield. “It’s a way of sharing Empower’s success with its member-owners, and a way to thank them for their membership.” The amount each member receives represents a percentage on savings account dividends earned and a rebate on loan interest paid throughout the year. Members will see their dividend and interest rebate posted on D

Skype Won't Connect

Skype Won't Connect - Internet telephone service Skype left millions of users out in the cold Wednesday, as a problem with its connection system prevented people from signing in. The number of users on the service, which spun off from eBay last year, began falling earlier today — something that isn’t “typical or expected,” the company said in an official blog post. Technology blog ReadWriteWeb said the drop was significant: Numbers went from about 21 million to about 10 million. Skype engineers are working on the problem, the company said. But the fix may take “a few hours,” and advanced features like video calling might not be available until after that. Skype Won't Connect Downtime is a potentially huge problem for Internet services like Skype, which have made an effort to convince users that they’re as stable as traditional carriers. The service is known for being relatively reliable, with its last major outage in August 2007, reported Digits colleague Ben Rooney at

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety - After increasing its standards for 2011 models, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that 66 vehicles--more than double the 2010 total--rate as best in the industry at protecting passengers from front, side, rollover and rear crashes. Only 27 vehicles qualified last year after the group, funded by the insurance industry, required that vehicles pass a roof-strength test to earn a good rating, claiming that stronger roofs would reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury by 50 percent in a rollover accident. The most mentioned carmakers on the 2011 list are Hyundai/Kia and Volkswagen/Audi, both with nine vehicles to get the Top Safety Pick designation. General Motors, Ford/Lincoln and Toyota/Lexus/Scion had eight vehicles on the list, and Subaru was the only manufacturer to win in all the vehicle classes for which it was eligible. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Safety is a priority among this crop of winners,"

Chicago Fire Department

Chicago Fire Department - Two firefighters were killed today as they fought a huge blaze in an abandoned building. Not only were two lives lost but also 19 others were injured. This building used to house a laundry but was since left vacant. The Chicago fire department is surely feeling the loss today. The Chicago fire department did everything they could to put out the blaze quickly and the other firefighters are very upset about the lives lost in the fire. The two firefighters that died were named Edward Stringer and Cory Ankum. When the warning call went out about firefighters being trapped in the blaze over 100 other firefighters came to the scene to help out. The Chicago fire department is overwhelmed with the love and help that has been shown to them. The Mayor’s secretary is actually the wife of Cory Ankum, one of the firemen that was killed. The Mayor quickly returned from New York to help deal with this horrible tragedy. According to reports all of this started at 7 a.m.

Rex Ryan Foot Fetish

Rex Ryan Foot Fetish - Recently a series of videos appeared on the web featuring a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the wife of the Jet’s coach Rex Ryan. Since the videos were released by the sports website Deadspin there has been quite a bit of controversy with many people claiming that she is in fact the wife of the football team’s coach. There is no doubt that the woman who appears in the video looks very much like Michelle Ryan who has been married to Rex for twenty three years. The pseudonym that the woman uses online is “Ihaveprettyfeet” and many of her features are similar to that of Rex’s wife but thus far there has been no real confirmation on the story. Rex Ryan Foot Fetish Similar to Ryan’s wife, the woman who appears in the videos is a housewife who also has earned a master’s degree and even shares the same birth month. The details of the woman’s profile bear an uncanny resemblance to that of the coach’s wife and the coach’s commented on the internet dis

Antoine Dodson Christmas Bed Intruder

Antoine Dodson Christmas Bed Intruder - Finally, a Christmas song more disturbing than "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Everyone's favorite witness, Antoine Dodson, is out with a carol titled "Chimney Intruder" that reimagines Santa as a rather sinister criminal. Dodson, who found a place in the viral firmament after giving an impassioned speech on the news about the attempted rape of his sister, debuted the song on the place where memes go to die, Lopez Tonight. While we commend Dodson on his ability to make proverbial lemonade out of life's lemons (with his Gregory Brothers-remixed Billboard Hot 100 jam and his own sex offender app), we really hope this song doesn't make it into the Christmas canon. Somehow attempted rape doesn't quite spell "Happy Holidays," if you ask us. Antoine Dodson Christmas Bed Intruder

Man Returns Dog of Flanders

Man Returns Dog of Flanders - Mark McKee is lucky a Michigan library isn't charging him a late fee for returning a book 76 years late. In 1934, the 13-year-old McKee checked out "A Dog of Flanders" by English author Marie Louise de la Ramee from the Mount Clemens Public Library. Recently, McKee, now 89, said he discovered the book and mailed it to the library. "I was entranced by the book and kept it with my prized possessions, intending to return it forthwith," McKee wrote in an accompanying letter. "Thus began a 76-year odyssey of missed opportunity and intention." Man Returns Dog of Flanders McKee, who is a former publisher of The Macomb Daily, said he found the book among his possessions and wanted to do the right thing. "My conscience took over," wrote McKee, who is now a winter resident in Chandler, Ariz. Library Director Donald Worrell Jr. said he was thrilled to get the package from McKee. "He spent a great amoun

9/11 Responders Bill

9/11 Responders Bill - Senate Democrats failed Thursday to win a procedural vote to open debate on a bill that would provide medical benefits and compensation for emergency workers who were first on the scene of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The motion for cloture, or to begin debate, needed 60 votes to pass due to a Republican filibuster, but fell short at 57-42 in favor. While supporters said they would try to bring the bill up again, either on its own or as part of other legislation to be considered, the vote Thursday jeopardized the measure's chances for approval in the final weeks of the current congressional session. 9/11 Responders Bill

Skype is Down

Skype is Down - It wasn't exactly a red-letter day for Skype: Users trying to access the service to make calls Wednesday morning had trouble connecting, a problem confirmed by Skype in a Twitter message. The VoIP service continued to update users through the day, saying by 4:00 p.m. EST that service is "now gradually returning to normal--we expect it may take several hours for everyone to be able to sign in again, however." Skype is Down The problem, Skype explained on its website, originated among its supernodes, many of which (Skype wouldn't say how many) were "taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype." The site went on to say "Our engineers are creating new ‘mega-supernodes' as fast as they can" and referred visitors back to Twitter for status updates. To add to the ignominy, in a classic cause-equals-effect motion, the number of Skype users complaining about the outage on Twitter likely caused the annoying "fa

WikiLeaks Task Force

WikiLeaks Task Force - The CIA has launched a WikiLeaks Task Force, better known by the agency as the acronym: WTF. According to a report by the Washington Post, the agency has launched the task force to appraise the impact of thousands of sensitive diplomatic documents and military files hitting the web thanks to WikiLeaks. Among the task force’s responsibilities is “whether the agency's ability to recruit informants could be damaged by declining confidence in the U.S. government's ability to keep secrets,” the report said. WikiLeaks Task Force CIA spokesman George Little told the paper that the panel is being led by the CIA's Counterintelligence Center. It is made up of more than two dozen members from departments across the agency. "It's just a huge vulnerability," an unnamed former high-ranking CIA officer told the Post. "Nobody could carry out enough paper to do what WikiLeaks has done." WikiLeaks Task Force

Chicago Firefighters

Chicago Firefighters - Two Chicago firefighters were killed and more than a dozen injured Wednesday after they became trapped in a building while battling a warehouse blaze. Rescuers dug frantically to free the two, who were among at least four firefighters trapped inside the building. At least 15 other firefighters were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the deaths just before 11 a.m. Eastern time. "Without warning the roof collapsed trapping four firefighters," Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Huff said at a press conference. "Despite our best efforts at the scene and in the hospitals, two firefighters succumbed to their injuries." Chicago Firefighters Hoff identified the dead firemen as Edward Stringer and Cory Ankum. Ozzy Osbourne Lady Gaga

Ozzy Osbourne Lady Gaga - The Prince of Darknes loves Lady Gaga, but even he feels the Pop Princess should give it a rest for a while. Ozzy Osbourne dished to Us Weekly on his tired feelings for Gaga, saying she needs to play a little hard-to-get with the press. "I like her, but I'm getting a bit sick of her," Osbourne says. "When I turn on the TV, I see her wearing another lamp shade or whatever. She needs to take a break, I think, for an hour or so." While Ozzy thinks Gaga could be the next Madonna if "she plays her cards right," the metal god feels she's overworking herself. Ozzy Osbourne Lady Gaga "Every day it is something else else. The specialness of her is gonna get killed if she doesn't calm it down. Who manages her? Someone should whisper in her ear and say back off for a couple of months -- let people gain interest back. Let people want you, you know?" To Ozzy's dismay, Gaga's workload isn't going to

Perlitz, an honorary commencement speaker, had been facing anywhere from eight to nineteen years in prison after pleading guilty on August 18, 2010 for one count of traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct to Haiti. Douglas Perlitz Sentenced What started as a story of the embodiment of Jesuit ideals and Christian charity ended in catastrophe today with the sentencing of Perlitz. Perlitz, who founded Project Pierre Touissant (PPT) in 1997, ran the project until the Haitian Fund board of directors removed him after allegations of sexual assault surfaced in 2008. PPT took in children from the streets of Haiti and provided them with meals, sports activ

Skating with the Stars Finale

Skating with the Stars Finale - Give or take a mystery illness and a bloody injury or two, Skating WIth the Stars has kinda fallen through the cracks. But despite a pretty icy reception from TV audiences, Real Housewives of New York alum Bethenny Frankel and All My Children hottie Rebecca Budig twirled into Tuesday's finale with something to prove and one shared goal: Elate Dick Buttons. Skating with the Stars Finale And skate the routine of their lives, of course. Well, there were no falls, flubs or nervous freakouts this time as Rebecca and pro partner Fred Palascak were named the first-ever (and perhaps only) winners of Skating With the Stars . "I'm shocked, really I am!," exclaimed Rebecca. "Bethenny and I were talking about it, really…I'm just shocked. I owe all of this to Fred, who is an unbelievable teacher. I've said it a hundred times…I owe it all to you." Well, we weren't shocked, after she and Fred scored the season'
