Who Won DWTS

Who Won DWTS - And the season-11 champion of Dancing with the Stars is...

Jennifer Grey!

The actress, 50, grabbed the ABC competition's mirrorball trophy on Tuesday's results show, beating out fellow finalists Kyle Massey and Bristol Palin.

PHOTOS: Bristol's wild DWTS days

Grey and pro partner Derek Hough entered the finale as clear frontrunners, scoring raves from judges and a perfect 60 for their two dances on Monday (including an emotional cha-cha tribute to her iconic Dirty Dancing role and late costar Patrick Swayze.)

The star burst into tears immediately after winning. The mother (to Stella, 8, with actor husband Clark Gregg) almost didn't dance on Tuesday after rupturing a disk the night before and visiting the hospital.

"I'm glad I did [dance]!" a tearful Grey (who endured multiple surgeries for thyroid cancer and an old neck injury before DWTS) admitted to host Tom Bergeron.

(To determine the winner, call-in and online votes were combined with judges' scores for their two Tuesday-night dances.)

Still, it was one of the most hotly contested wins in DWTS history. On Tuesday, ABC said that "a record amount of activity" temporarily overloaded its online and telephone voting systems following Monday's show, according to the Associated Press.

Young mom Palin, 20, was the lightning-rod contestant of the season. The ex-fiance of Levi Johnston and daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin avoided the axe despite consistently low scores. Some detractors suggested a right-wing-voting bloc was behind her DWTS dominance. When Palin advanced to the finals last Tuesday (while early favorite Brandy was eliminated), one Wisconsin man shot his television in disgust. Then, over the weekend, an envelope containing a mysterious white powder, allegedly addressed to Palin, arrived at DWTS studios. (The powder was later identified as harmless talcum powder)

New Zealand Miners Presumed Dead

New Zealand Miners Presumed Dead - All 29 miners trapped underground in a New Zealand mine are dead, the official in charge of a the rescue attempt said Wednesday.

Gary Knowles, superintendent of Tasman Police Command, announced the deaths to the families.
During the rescue attempt, air released from drilling into the mine contained high levels of carbon monoxide and methane but little oxygen, according to police officials.

Authorities said the two camera-bearing military robots sent into the mine had found a worker's helmet with its light still on, but no sign of life. The helmet, police said, was dropped by one of the two miners who escaped the original explosion.

One of the robots had broken down earlier Tuesday but was back online, said Peter Whittall, CEO of Pike River Coal, which owns the mine. Whittall said a third robot was on its way to the site.
One the units reached a "fresh air base" and found nobody there, he said.

The 29 men, ages 17 to 62, had been missing since Friday, when an explosion ripped through the Greymouth mine. Most of the miners are from New Zealand, but the group also includes Scotlanders and South Africans.

The missing men are believed to have been spread throughout the mine, with perhaps half trapped in one area.

Shelling Of Yeonpyeong

Shelling Of Yeonpyeong - The forests on distant Yeonpyeong Island were ablaze on Wednesday, one day after a ferocious artillery exchange between North and South Korean military units. But to many residents of Seoul, the violent attack on the tiny island seemed largely contained and unthreatening.

“I was talking with a friend this morning and we wondered why we weren’t more concerned,” a Seoul restaurant owner, Pyun Sung-ja, said on Wednesday. “I guess it’s because the area of the shelling is so far from here. It feels like it happened in another country.”

The artillery exchange that lasted for about an hour on Tuesday afternoon killed two South Korean marines and reportedly destroyed dozens of houses on the fishing island, which is about twice the size of New York’s Central Park. The South’s military went on high alert, fighter-bombers were ready on the tarmac and the president plotted strategy with his advisers in the underground Situation Room in Seoul.

The incident rattled diplomatic nerves in capitals not only in the region but also around the world. Residents of Seoul, however, seemed to display only a mild anxiety on Wednesday, caught somewhere between calm and dread, and maybe breathing a collective sigh of relief that things had not escalated.

Search Continues For Jeni Lynn Watson

Search Continues For Jeni Lynn Watson - Police in two states are searching for a missing Mercyhurst College student. The 20-year-old junior left the school in Erie last Thursday to drive home, only to vanish several hours later.

New York State Police say Jenni-Lyn Watson came home from college for Thanksgiving. She was home visiting her family when she disappeared Friday morning.

Tuesday, search and rescue crews searched on the ground and in the air, pinpointing the area which her cell phone had its final activity. Investigators said they received a signal from a heavily wooded area in Liverpool, N.Y.

"It's completely unlike her," said next door neighbor Stacey Kinahan. "She's a ballerina, a wonderful student, keeps in touch with her family and loves her family. It's very out of character for her not to contact anybody,"

Her friends are doing what they can to help in the search.

A Facebook page setup received thousands of members in less than 48 hours. Many of her friends have changed their profile picture to that of Jenni-Lyn in an effort to bring the case attention and get the word out.

The Facebook posts are working. Dozens of people have been showing up to pass out fliers in her hometown, and others have been spreading the online search across upstate New York and Pennsylvania.

An advertising company is using its electronic billboards to post Watson's picture at seven locations in the Syracuse area, as well as one in Buffalo and one in Albany.

Violent Supercell Thunderstorm

Violent Supercell Thunderstorm - The National Weather Service confirmed yesterday that a single, low-intensity tornado traversed a path from just east of The Diamond in North Richmond into central Henrico County and the Cold Harbor area of Hanover County late Wednesday afternoon, with wind speeds of 80 to 90 mph.

No deaths and only one injury were reported.

Weather service officials from Wakefield surveyed the damage yesterday and determined the tornado's path extended 11.5 miles in an east-northeastward direction from about 5 to 5:20 p.m.

The tornado's rate of strength was rated an EF0 to an EF1, the firstand second-lowest ratings on a scale of 0 to 5.

The weather service said most of the damage was in the form of downed trees and power lines, with some siding and roof damage to homes. More than 100 area structures sustained damage from the tornado, which measured 200 yards to 250 yards wide, officials said.

The most significant damage occurred as a result of trees or large branches falling on homes, several of which were declared uninhabitable as a result, officials said.

Most of the damage was produced from the lowest category of tornado intensity, with wind gusts of 65 to 85 mph. Maximum gusts were estimated at 90 mph.

Henrico fire officials reported damage of varying degrees to 63 homes, with three of those dwellings declared inhabitable. Hanover authorities reported damage to 77 properties, which included sheds, fencing and other structures. In Richmond, an estimated 45 to 50 homes sustained damage ranging from trees falling onto houses to minor property damage.

Minor Earthquake In Maui

Minor Earthquake In Maui - The Maui invitational is getting very physical right now. Washington and Kentucky are hitting the decks with such abandon and force that the tremors are being felt all over the court.

The actual cause: A 4.7 earthquake went off in Hawaii. There was brief confusion the court. Jay Bilas was baffled for a moment and there was a slight pause in the game as news of the quake was discussed. Maui Wowie.

All is well. The game has continued without much interruption and all has returned to normal on the court in Maui. As for the coaching staff of Washington’s wardrobe choice? That’s drawing all sorts of interesting reviews. (Photo evidence of the atrocity to come).

As for the game, it was a doozy–about as good a college basketball game you’ll ever see in November. The Vacator and his “student”-athletes prevailed.

Rumors Christina Aguilera Is Pregnant

Rumors Christina Aguilera Is Pregnant - Are the rumors that say Christina Aguilera is pregnant true or false?

Last night during the American Music Awards, Christina Aguilera, while performing a new song from her up coming film Burlesque, sported what looked like a baby bump. Could Aguilera be pregnant?

Christina Aguilera has stated being a single mom is hard; she’s constantly juggling the balance of being a single mom and having a career. Is she possibly adding a new baby to the mix?
Rumors have us wondering if this “maybe baby” is the cause of her separation with husband of 5-years Jordan Bratman. Did Christina Aguilera cheat or has she just put on some pounds, which everyone noticed?

Aside from the pregnancy rumors, Christina Aguilera will be making her debut along side Cher in the musical “Burlesque”, opening this Wednesday. Aguilera plays Ali, an Iowa girl who moves to L.A. and becomes a star singing and dancing in a vulgar Sunset Strip lounge.

During a recent interview with Chelsea Handler, the 29-year-old states, “Burlesque” was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But sometimes change is necessary. I’m entering a whole different chapter in my life now with the movie, and my son, and being a mother – the next evolution in my life. And it feels good.”

Thanksgiving Desserts

Thanksgiving Desserts - I always feel bad for the desserts on Thanksgiving. By the time dessert rolls out, people have gorged themselves on appetizers and turkey, and either skip desert altogether or eat very little of it. Even when I do eat a whole piece of pie, I'm generally on taste overload and can't really give dessert my full appreciation.

So, although pie is the traditional favorite for Thanksgiving dessert, after years of seeing half-eaten slices scraped into the trash, I have decided that maybe bite-size treats are the greener way to go.

Luckily, bite-size doesn't mean giving up the tastes we love. Whether you love pumpkin, apple, or pecan pie, there is a bite-size option out there. And with tiny portions, you can enjoy one of each!

Let's get cooking...

In seeking out miniature dessert options, I discovered that the bar and the tartlet can replace most traditional pie recipes, providing similar flavor and texture in smaller bites. "Tartlet" can refer to anything smaller than the standard 9-12" tart, however, for bite size treats, I like to use mini muffin tins.

Apple Options. I think apple pie is the hardest to turn into a bite size option because of its yummy gooey consistency. If you want a traditional apple pie consistency and taste, you will need some time and patience—but the results are adorable and memorable. I would definitely recruit Ben and Be to help with this project.

Take your dough, and using a round cookie cutter, cut out dough circles that are slightly larger than the top opening of one mini-muffin cup. Push the dough gently into each muffin cup. Dice the peeled apples into small cubes and add the sugar and other ingredients as usual. Put a dollop of apple mixture in each cup and bake. (If you are really patient and have plenty of time and/or help, you could cut out mini tops for the mini pies. Just be sure to cut slits in the top.)

Keep an eye on them, because the baking time will be shorter than for a whole pie.

South Korea Bombed By North Korea

South Korea Bombed By North Korea - Just this morning , South Korea was heavily bombed from North Korea without any warnings or prior knowledge of war . They dropped heavy artillery on Yeonpyeong Island , killing one sailor and injuring dozens . Putting houses on fire . South Korea tried firing back with a few of their own . South Korea is now on high-alert in danger of another attack while North Korea denies the intentions to bomb in the first place .

North Korea shot 200 rounds of artillery on that island , that’s enough to destroy the island . Videos showed smoke emerging from the area where almost 1,200 and 1,300 people live . Kim Jong Il is still to answer these questions as to why this happened . As of now , South Korea has scrambled up its F-16 fighter jets and are ready for anything.

Who Won Dancing With The Stars?

Who Won Dancing With The Stars? - The 2010 season was loaded with controversy and angst as Bristol Palin continued to advance, all the way finals where she is joined by Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey.

In second place is Kyle with a 56/60 for Team Massey and a third place score of 52 of 60 is in the books for Team Palin. The controversy has been building with each week that Palin advances and really boiled over with last week's elimination.

Contactless Debit Cards

Contactless Debit Cards - Contactless debit cards will make their formal debut in Canada next year with the launch of Interac Flash from Acxsys Corp.’s Interac Association, Canada’s national debit network. Interac’s first two Flash issuers are Scotiabank and RBC Royal Bank, which will roll out their first contactless cards next summer. The first acquirer is TD Merchant Services, a unit of Toronto-Dominion Bank. More issuers and acquirers are on the way, an Interac spokesperson tells Digital Transactions News, though no announcements have been made yet.

Interac and the banks tested Flash this summer at some high-volume, small-ticket merchants in downtown Toronto. The spokesperson expects national merchants will be making formal announcements about acceptance. “There’s a lot of excitement in the merchant community,” she says. “Merchants are looking for that faster throughput.”

In a statement, the Retail Council of Canada endorsed the new card. “Interac Flash is a welcome and needed addition to the Canadian retail marketplace,” said Diane J. Brisebois, the trade group’s president and chief executive. “Merchants will now be able to provide customers with a faster and more convenient checkout experience while reducing the costs of handling cash.”

The Interac spokesperson adds that consumers, too, have been signaling that they want to use debit cards as substitutes for cash in small transactions at convenience stores, fast-food restaurants and transit. Interac estimates Canadians annually make $90 billion in cash payments for purchases under $20.

For most small transactions, cardholders won’t be required to enter their debit card PIN as they usually do. But to control risk, Interac has its own measures that include dollar maximums ranging from $25 to $100 spread over a number of transactions, after which the cardholder would be prompted to enter his or her PIN. Each issuer can add its own limits on transaction and dollar volumes and other fraud-control measures.

Bristol Palin Dancing With The Stars

Bristol Palin Dancing With The Stars - Now that Bristol Palin’s made it to the finals of Dancing With The Stars with partner Mark Ballas, she’s noticed her figure has changed.

“I’m definitely happy with my legs,” the hoofer, 20, tells me. “I know I’ve got a lot of work to do, but I’m getting in shape and I’m having a good time out there.”

What’s her fitness goal?

“Just to tone up and feel good about myself.”

Mark explains their winning strategy.

“I can read her when she’s had too much of it, and then we take a break,” he tells me. “We work well together. We don’t fight or have any of that. We play around with it, and when we need to get to take a break, we take a break.”

Mom Sarah Palin is pleased with Bristol’s progress.

“She’s excited that I’m on it, and I’m doing so good.”

As for her one-year-old son Tripp?

“I spin around in the hallways with him,” she says. “The whole time I sit with him, I’m holding him.”

Bristol doesn’t feel bad about taking time away from her little boy to appear on the reality competition.

“I’ve been a working mom since he was born,” Bristol says. “Millions of moms work and have kids at the same time, and I’m still a good mom.”

Jenni-Lyn Watson Is Missing

Jenni-Lyn Watson Is Missing - Authorities in upstate New York are searching for 20-year old college student Jenni-Lyn Watson, who disappeared last Friday after returning home from Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving break.

SAP To Pay Oracle Billions

SAP To Pay Oracle Billions - SAP AG, the world’s largest maker of business application software, must pay $1.3 billion to Oracle Corp. for copyright infringement by a now-defunct software maintenance unit, a federal jury in California decided.

Today’s verdict is the largest jury award of 2010, according to Bloomberg data. It is the largest ever for copyright infringement and the 23rd-largest of all time for any jury award, according to Bloomberg data.

The jury awarded the damages after an 11-day trial in Oakland, California. Oracle, the second-biggest maker of business software, sued Walldorf, Germany-based SAP in 2007 claiming its U.S.-based unit made hundreds of thousands of illegal downloads and several thousand copies of Oracle’s software to avoid paying licensing fees and steal customers.

“We are, of course, disappointed by this verdict and will pursue all available options, including post-trial motions and appeal if necessary,” Bill Wohl, an SAP spokesman, said outside the courtroom. “This will unfortunately be a prolonged process and we continue to hope that the matter can be resolved appropriately without more years of litigation.”

Geoffrey Howard, an attorney for Redwood City, California- based Oracle, said before the verdict that the breadth of the illegal downloading was “unprecedented” in the software industry.

Why Is Darvocet Being Recalled?

Why Is Darvocet Being Recalled? - The popular painkillers Darvocet and Darvon have been recalled by the FDA after it was determined that all medications containing the painkiller propxyphene pose an unreasonable risk of heart problems.

The Darvocet and Darvon recall was announced Friday afternoon by the FDA and Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which manufactures the popular pain medications. All generic Darvocet and generic Darvon versions of the medication have also been recalled.

Darvon was first introduced in 1957, containing propoxyphene to relieve mild to moderate post-surgical pain. Today it is most commonly prescribed as Darvocet, which combines the active ingredient in Darvon with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol.

Darvocet has become one of the 25 most commonly prescribed medications, which has been prescribed to more than 22 million people.

An FDA advisory panel first recommended that the agency recall Darvocet and Darvon in February 2009, after determining that the minimal pain relief benefits provided by the drugs do not outweigh the substantial risk of overdose and suicide. However, the FDA decided in July 2009 to allow the medications to remain on the market with a new “black box” warning about Darvon and Darvocet side effects, which is the most stringent warning label possible under federal regulations.

Ugly Betty Actor Michael Brea

Ugly Betty Actor Michael Brea - Michael Brea gains headlines after he struck his own mother Yannick Brea with a katana.

How can Michael Brea take the life of his 55 year old mom? Currently, Brea is given psychiatric assistance.

So who is Michael Brea? Here’s a lowdown of him:

Aside from appearing in the now defunct ABC TV show Ugly Betty, Michael dabbled in business by buying a franchise of Subway in Brooklyn. It closed down because of low performance.
Michael has a twin brother named Marcel Brea.

His looks might be familiar because he appeared in posters of Coca Cola Full Throttle Energy Drinks.

Wireless Generation On Sale - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. (NWS) just purchased Wireless Generation for $360 million. Technically it's $360 million for 90% of the company, but either way it's a lot of money.

When a company in your general space gets bought for a huge amount by an unnatural acquirer, it merits some attention. But before I go on, I want to congratulate the Wireless Generation team on the acquisition. Good for all of you!

As Audrey notes, this is on the heels of News Corp appointing NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein. So with that hire, and the WG acquisition, it looks like News Corp is getting into education technology in a big way.

FBI Interested In SAC Capital

FBI Interested In SAC Capital - The Journal’s Susan Pulliam had reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation attempted to pressure an independent analyst to tape his calls with SAC Capital, according to one person close to the situation. “Their request suggests that the government is heightening an ongoing examination of activities at SAC,” Pulliam wrote.

And those who’ve been following the unfolding insider trading probe know that two of the hedge funds raided yesterday have ties to SAC. Level Global and Diamondback are both run by former managers of Steve Cohen’s giant SAC Capital Advisors hedge fund.

Vincent Jackson Added To Chargers

Vincent Jackson Added To Chargers - Not that it should be of any surprise if you've been paying attention, but Vincent Jackson has officially been added to the San Diego Chargers roster and now has three weeks worth of practice under his belt. He should see a good amount of time and opportunities against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

To make room for him, the Chargers cut K Kris Brown. Brown was signed to replace Nate Kaeding while Kaeding's groin healed, and is no longer needed on the team.

Norv Turner has said that he believes Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee will both play on Sunday night, and there's always a chance that Antonio Gates feels good enough to go as well. That being said, with Patrick Crayton out and Floyd and Naanee missing practice time, it wouldn't surprise me to see VJax as the #1 WR going up against the Colts.

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Trivia

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Trivia - It’s more than just a break between Halloween and Christmas. In fact, Thanksgiving has been a round for hundreds of years and has its own traditions. Here are 20 little known facts about the great Turkey Day holiday:

1) Thanksgiving can occur as early as Nov. 22 and as late as Nov. 28.

2) Thanksgiving is an amalgam of different traditions, including ancient harvest festivals, the religious New England Puritan Thanksgiving, the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England, and changing political and ideological assumptions of Native Americans.

3) The famous pilgrim celebration at Plymouth Colony Massachusetts in 1621 is traditionally regarded as the first American Thanksgiving. However, there are actually 12 claims to where the “first” Thanksgiving took place: two in Texas, two in Florida, one in Maine, two in Virginia and five in Massachusetts.

4) The Pilgrim’s thanksgiving feast in 1621 occurred sometime between Sept. 21 and Nov. 1. It lasted three days and included 50 surviving pilgrims and approximately 90 Wampanoag Indians, including Chief Massasoit. Their menu differed from modern Thanksgiving dinners and included berries, shellfish, boiled pumpkin and deer.

5) The turkeys typically depicted in Thanksgiving pictures are not the same as the domestic turkeys most people eat at Thanksgiving. Domestic turkeys usually weigh twice as much and are too large to fly.

6) Now a Thanksgiving dinner staple, cranberries were actually used by Native Americans to treat arrow wounds and to dye clothes.

7) The famous “Pilgrim and Indian” story featured in modern Thanksgiving narratives was not initially part of early Thanksgiving stories, largely due to tensions between Indians and colonists. The first Thanksgiving in America actually occurred in 1541, when Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his expedition held a thanksgiving celebration in Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas panhandle.

8) “Unthanksgiving Day” commemorates the struggle for Native American rights. Held every year on the island of Alcatraz since 1975, “Unthanksgiving Day” commemorates the survival of Native Americans following the arrival and settlement of Europeans in the Americas.

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Turkey Recipes

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Turkey Recipes - Gwyneth Paltrow isn't the only celebrity with pretensions to culinary glory. Especially when it comes to the mother of all cooking days: Thanksgiving.

Last year, Paltrow -- insouciant gastronome extraordinaire -- shared a whopping 13 recipes, from caramelized Brussels sprouts to stuffed turkey burgers with cranberry ketchup, via her weekly GOOP newsletter. We've yet to see whether she'll update for 2010, but really -- why mess with perfection?

Earlier this month, another newspaper published Marilyn Monroe's recipe for a stuffing that would work in either chicken or turkey, the writer remarking that the ingredient-heavy concoction "bears the unmistakable balance of fussiness and flexibility that is the hallmark of an experienced and confident cook."

Looking for a more traditional stuffing? Maybe Tyrone Power's Turkey Stuffing -- which requires just seven ingredients (one of which is lard) -- is more your style. Bonus: while you cook you can ogle all the shirtless pix of the swashbuckling Power on the recipe page.

Stars, they're just like us! Which means they sometimes have to put up with pesky vegetarians (like me) bellying up to the table only to take a pass on the unnaturally massive poultry. Fear not. Alicia Silverstone -- also a veg -- shared this yummy recipe for Moroccan couscous with saffron in her book "The Kind Diet." The scrumptious-sounding dish includes chunks of butternut squash, carrots and zucchini. For more veggie fare, try Boy George's Chick Pea Corruption, which will provide much-needed protein and the opportunity to use that garam masala you've been keeping in the spice rack.

Timothy Leary -- so counter-cultural, that guy. Which explains why in 1984 he shared his choice for Thanksgiving's centerpiece: goose with prune, apple and chestnut stuffing. "Mrs. Leary prepares the feast," according to an article that appeared in Vanity Fair. "Dr. Leary never cooks. He also doesn't eat very much. Too busy with his projects, we presume." And, no, there's no secret three-lettered ingredient, though the pitted prunes that have been marinated in a jar of port for a week may be slightly hallucinogenic.

Spectrum Demolished In Philadelphia

Spectrum Demolished In Philadelphia - With a few swings of an aptly-hued orange wrecking ball, a hole was punched into Philadelphia hockey history on Tuesday as the demolition of the Spectrum began following a ceremony in the parking lot near the original home of the Philadelphia Flyers.

With Philadelphia sports legends like Hockey Hall of Famers Bob Clarke and Bernie Parent, as well as NBA legend and former Philadelphia 76er Julius Erving, looking on, the first step in the tear-down of the building began on a chilly, overcast day. The cold weather, however, didn't stop about 1,000 fans from descending on the South Philadelphia sports complex starting at 8 a.m., about 4 1/2 hours before the first hole was punched into the 44-year-old building.

The full demolition is expected to take about four months, and in its place will be Philly Live! -- a complex that, when finished, will consist of bars, restaurants and hotels.

"Many of us have had so many exciting times at the Spectrum," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said. "This demolition is not really the end of an era, it's the start of a new one for our great city."

The Spectrum hosted a number of major events, topped by the final game of the 1974 Stanley Cup Final, which saw the Flyers become the first expansion team to win the Cup. Cup Finals in 1975, 1976, 1980, 1985 and 1987 also were played there, as was the famed 1976 game that saw the Flyers beat the Soviet Red Army team. Two NHL All-Star Games were played there, in 1976 and 1992.

The AHL Philadelphia Phantoms also won their first Calder Cup title at the Spectrum, in 1998.

That made it a bittersweet day for many. Fans got as close to the fenced-off demolition site as possible for one final farewell to the building, taking their final pictures and video.

It also was a hard day for Ed Snider. The founder and current chairman of the Flyers helped finance the construction of the Spectrum in 1966, and saw the building almost like one of his children.

Madrid Hammers Ajax

Madrid Hammers Ajax - Cristiano Ronaldo took his scoring record for the season to 18 goals in 19 games as Real Madrid hammered Ajax 4-0 on Tuesday to claim top spot in Group G of the Champions League.
Karim Benzema fired into the roof of the net from the edge of area in the 36th after Mesut Oezil skillfully laid the ball into his path, before Alvaro Arbeloa doubled the Spanish side's advantage with a fierce shot in the 44th.

Arbeloa then set up Ronaldo to make it 2-0 with a close-range shot and the Portuguese winger completed the scoring from the spot in the 80th.

Madrid's night was marred when both Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos were sent off late in the game after picking up second bookings.

Madrid has 13 points, five more than AC Milan. Ajax remains third with four.

Benzema, who was deputizing for the injured Gonzalo Higuain in the Madrid attack, almost gave his side the lead in the 18th when he charged past Toby Alderweireld and fired a shot from a tight angle but Maarteen Stekelenburg made a save, palming the ball away.

Two minutes later, Scotland referee Craig Thomson left Ronaldo frustrated when he waved away the Portugal winger's penalty appeal after he appeared to have been fouled in the area by Ajax rightback Gregory van der Wiel.

Madrid had to be patient as Ajax enjoyed spells of possession in the first half even though the Amsterdam giant rarely tested Iker Casillas.

The Spain goalkeeper was only called into action to deal with Jan Vertonghen's thumping free kick in the second half.

But Stekelenburg was forced to make a series of saves to stop a Madrid onslaught.

The build-up to the Madrid goal began with Eyong Enoh's foul on Pedro Leon. Alonso dispatched a long ball deep into the Ajax area, allowing Oezil to invitingly set up Benzema with a first-time pass.

Rural School Closures

Rural School Closures - The Corbett family should be getting ready for the relocation of a lifetime. Flora and Tom and their four-year-old twins, Grace and Harry, are leaving their Invernesshire home and heading back to run Tom's family farm on the Hebridean island of Mull.

The farm, set in 25,000 acres on the south coast of the island, would be to anyone's eyes an idyllic place to raise a young family. But a few weeks ago the Corbetts received the news that the twins' intended primary school was to shut due to funding cuts.

Argyll and Bute Council has proposed that the 14-pupil Lochdonhead primary school in the village of Lochdon be closed with effect from 30 June 2011, and that its pupils should continue their education at Salen primary school, which has 54 pupils, 30 miles away on a single-track road.

Lochdonhead is one of 26 the council has proposed to amalgamate into 20, to save £1.9m from its education budget.

It is one of two prospective closures on the island of Mull, the other being Ulva school, which will merge with Dervaig school, eight miles north. Formal consultations on the closures started on 2 November and a decision will be made on Thursday.

Across the UK, austerity brings with it a threat to the smallest schools, many of which are in remote areas.

There is no official government policy on small schools either in Scotland or the rest of the UK. It's up to local authorities to decide what the provision should be. However, any proposal put forward by a local authority must be properly consulted or it will be called forward for scrutiny.

North Korea Fires On South Korea

North Korea Fires On South Korea - The shelling by North Korea prompted return fire by the South, military and domestic South Korean media reported, and brought tensions on the peninsula to a recent high, at a time when risk reduction was already gripping global financial markets.

"The market was already quite nervous given the failure of the Irish bailout package to calm sentiment toward other peripheral countries. Bad news on geopolitics may add fuel to this trend toward position-squaring," said Mirza Baig, senior currency strategist with Deutsche Bank in Singapore.

The euro was down 0.4 percent on the day at $1.3561, down from around $1.3600 when the news on Korea broke.

The dollar was up 0.4 percent against the yen at 83.65 yen, up from 83.40 yen before the shelling began.

"We're seeing higher geopolitical risk and significant market reaction given the scale of the incident," said Dariusz Kowalczyk, strategist with Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.

Trading has been choppy with a holiday in Japan taking a toll on liquidity, a condition that is likely to continue this week with the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday looming.

The market is not convinced that aid to Ireland would prevent other heavily indebted members of the 16-nation bloc from also seeking help, analysts said.

Indeed, Canada's finance minister said on Monday he is pressing the European Union to address the Portuguese debt crisis quickly, although he fell short of saying the country would need a bailout like Ireland.

Japanese Rain Goggles, Two And A Half Men

Japanese Rain Goggles, Two And A Half Men - Perhaps they should change the name of 'Two and a Half Men' to 'Death Wish for Charlie,' because after tonight's episode, that looks like the direction the show is going in when it comes to Charlie Harper, Charlie Sheen's character.

For all the funny business involving guest Jenny McCarthy, who was back as Courtney the con artist who ripped him off three years ago, the take-away emotion from the episode was that Charlie is hurtling into a disastrous, self-destructive relationship. It's sort of the antithesis of last year's "healthy" romance with Chelsea.

Last season's Charlie was all gung-ho about being a better man, doing right by Chelsea and actually getting married. He was very un-Charlie like and not fun. The fact that he didn't marry Chelsea was a relief because a domesticated Charlie just doesn't play.

But do we really enjoy seeing Charlie throw caution to the wind and live life completely on the edge? The way he's been drinking and screwing this year has been over the top. In some ways, it's hilarious. In other ways, it's sad. But for much of this show, with Charlie gorging on Courtney's crazy antics, most of them were sexual, it was funny.

There was something about Japanese rain goggles ... a Google search reveals that it's just something Chuck Lorre and company made up. Still, just the imagination of what it might mean is pretty amusing.

Shelling At Yeonpyeong Island

Shelling At Yeonpyeong Island - South Korea scrambled fighter jets and returned fire after North Korea lobbed dozens of shells into its waters and an island, injuring 14 soldiers according to the government and YTN reports.

Television footage showed smoke billowing from Yeonpyeong island off South Korea’s northwest coast, where the shelling set fire to houses, YTN said. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed in a statement on its website that North Korea fired “several” shells.

Tensions with North Korea have risen in the past year after the sinking of a South Korean warship in March that killed 46 sailors. Kim Jong Il’s regime may be trying to force a change in policy by the U.S., which says it won’t engage with the North until it ends provocations and lives up to commitments on ending its nuclear weapons program, said Andrei Lankov, an associate professor at Kookmin University in Seoul.

“They want to direct attention to themselves, to say: ‘Look we are here, we are dangerous and we cannot just be ignored,” Lankov said by phone. The U.S. position had been to engage in talks when there was a prospect of democratization in the North, he said. “Now the chances for democratization are virtually zero, so they have nothing to talk about.”
