Quidditch World Cup 2010 Gets Underway In NY - They swooped in from 16 states and 46 colleges - all for a sport that was born out of wizards and witches flying around on broomsticks - and J.K. Rowling's imagination. "When you first hear about it you think there's no way this could work in real life," said Alex. "And when you see it, it's a cool game and you don't have to be a Harry Potter fan to appreciate it." Or the four leaps she made while entirely naked? Whatever it is, she's flying high these days, after overcoming the natural fear of hurtling toward Earth all alone at shocking speeds. "When I had a fewer number of jumps, I thought maybe I was going to die," she admits, "but now I can't live without skydiving because it has become my life." Elizabeth Smart

Elizabeth Smart - Dressed in a beige coat, the young woman walked quickly as she braved a phalanx of photographers and TV cameramen that would have flattered even an A-list Hollywood star. But this was no red carpet scene. It was outside the courthouse in Salt Lake City and the woman was Elizabeth Smart, 23, plucked from obscurity and into national fame by one of the most horrific kidnappings in US criminal history. The story of that crime, which saw a 14-year-old Smart held captive for nine months and forcibly "married" to a man who considered himself a Mormon prophet, stunned America in 2002. The bizarre details of the incident have finally emerged. Smart last week gave three days of testimony in the trial of Brian David Mitchell, a former street preacher who crept into her bedroom and spirited her away into the mountains at knifepoint. All week Smart's story gripped Salt Lake City, dominating newspapers and TV shows, and was followed across the US. "There i

"Consistently, I'm rolling the putts the way that I want to, and that's all I can ask for is to give myself as many opportunities as I can." Creamer finished second last year, two strokes behind Michelle Wie. "I really like coming here," Creamer said. "I enjoy the golf course. It sets up very well for my game. It's not the longest golf course that we play all year, but you have to hit a lot of fairways and you have to be very precise with your irons and that kind of suits my game. But coming in second last year, I definitely wanted t

Bush as he attempted to answer questions. Margarito Required Face Surgery After Pacquiao Fight

Margarito Required Face Surgery After Pacquiao Fight - Antonio Margarito was determined to make it to the end of his fight with Manny Pacquiao on Saturday no matter what, and he wound up paying a severe price as a result. Margarito will have surgery on Tuesday at Dallas Methodist Hospital to repair a fractured right eye socket, said promoter Bob Arum. Arum explained the surgery can’t be performed until the swelling on the eye has reduced. Pacquiao’s speed was far too much for Margarito to handle Saturday in their bout for the World Boxing Council super welterweight title before 41,734 fans at Cowboys Stadium. Pacquiao landed fast, hard combinations from the earliest moments of the fight and Margarito could not answer. Ringside physician Manuel Gonzalez, who started checking Margarito in the fourth round and last checked him after the 11th round, said Saturday he felt Margarito could see, so he didn’t recommend to referee Laurence Cole to stop the match. Somali Pirates Free British Sailors

Somali Pirates Free British Sailors - The retired British couple were sailing the world on a 38-foot-yacht that represented most of their life savings when Somali pirates captured them last year, demanding the sort of huge ransom a multimillionaire or a multinational company might cough up. The fact that Paul and Rachel Chandler couldn't pay a big ransom helped stretch out their ordeal 388 agonizing days — until Sunday, when they were released thin and exhausted, but smiling. It was one of the longest and most dramatic hostage situations since the Somali piracy boom began several years ago. The Chandlers were welcomed by the Somali community close to where they had been held, and later met with the Somali prime minister in Mogadishu. A private jet then flew them to Nairobi's military airport, where they were whisked away in a British Embassy vehicle. "We are happy to be alive, happy to be here, desperate to see our family, and so happy to be amongst decent, everyday

China Inflation Jumps To Two Year Highs

China Inflation Jumps To Two Year Highs - A jump in food costs drove China's inflation to a 25-month high in October despite government efforts to cool living costs, raising the possibility it might impose new controls that could further slow economic growth. The 4.4 percent inflation rate - due mostly to a 10.1 percent increase for food - was far above the official target of 3 percent and a sharp jump from September's 3.6 percent, official figures showed Thursday. The increases exceeded forecasts by private sector analysts. While other governments try to shore up shaky growth, Beijing wants to cool inflation and guide China's rapid expansion to a more sustainable level after its stimulus-fueled rebound from the global crisis. It raised interest rates last month and ordered banks on Wednesday to increase reserves in a move to curb lending. Inflation is so far limited to food but could spread as money from Beijing's stimulus and a flood of bank lending courses thr

Massachusetts Unemployment Falls To The Lowest Rate In A While

Massachusetts Unemployment Falls To The Lowest Rate In A While - The Massachusetts unemployment rate last month fell to its lowest level in more than a year, but the state's economic recovery showed signs of slowing as employers slashed jobs across several sectors. The jobless rate dove to 8.4 percent from 8.8 percent in August, hitting the lowest level since May 2009, the state Executive of Labor and Workforce Development reported today. A separate survey of employers, however, showed Massachusetts firms cut payrolls by more than 20,000 jobs in September, with the losses concentrated in leisure and hospitality, a tourism related sector, and education and health services. In addition, revised data showed the state also shed 3,000 jobs in August, instead of the initially reported gain of 2,100 jobs. State Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees said the September rate is down from 9.2 percent in August and is significantly below the 10.7 percent recorded a year ago. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said that Alabama's drop of 1.8 percentage points was the nation's biggest drop in unemployment of any state over the last 12 months. Alabama's unemployment rate has been declining each month since measuring 11 percent in April, and the new rate is the lowest recorded in Alabama in 1 1/2 years. Manny Pacquiao Beats Antonio Margarito

Manny Pacquiao Beats Antonio Margarito - FILIPINO boxer Manny Pacquiao captured the vacant WBC super welterweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas today. The 31-year-old Pacquiao won on all three judges' scorecards to extend his winning streak to 13. The southpaw used his hand speed and ring savvy to prevail in front of a crowd of over 50,000, despite giving up a 17-pound (7.71 kg) weight advantage. Pacquiao has shown little sign of losing speed and power as he moves up in weight to fight bigger and stronger opponents, but he failed to score the knockout on Saturday. Even so, the bout didn't turn into the same kind of dull affair as Pacquiao's fight against Joshua Clottey at the same venue in March. Unlike Clottey, Margarito came to fight. He paid the price as he suffered a nasty gash under the right eye and had a huge welt that almost closed his left eye as well. Manny Pacquiao Beats Antonio Margarito

Sam Kinison Documentary Tribute

Sam Kinison Documentary Tribute - The punchlines of Sam Kinison still scald even after two decades of his death. His humor brand such as dark, cerbral and raunchy of the early ’80s still has no peer in the modern comedy. He had set the stand-up world into ablaze with his blending scabrous insights, rock music, politically incorrect observations and also an ex-preacher’s sense of drama. The Back From Hell: A Tribut to Sam Kinison is not the documentary on his life, as many may be hoping. Directed by Robert Small, the documentary is more of touching the major aspects of Kinison and also of the over-reliance on the recent comics waxing rhapsodic about the comedian’s work. The documentary is of 60 minutes that aired earlier this year on the Comedy Central. Sam Kinison Documentary Tribute
