Cameron Diaz Gambit

Cameron Diaz Gambit - Filming for the Coen Brothers' latest film truly got off to a flying start as its two stars shot scenes at Heathrow Airport. Passengers tried to get a good view at Terminal 5 as Diaz strutted around in a pair of tiny shorts alongside her co-star Firth as they filmed the remake of 1960s crime caper Gambit. Diaz dons the shorts in the role of a rodeo cowgirl who becomes involved in the scheme because she is the splitting image of the wealthy man's wife. The part was played by Shirley Maclaine in the original, minus the Daisy Dukes. Firth looked very much like Michael Caine did in the role wearing dark rimmed glasses and a sharp grey suit. Luckily for Firth, he has the same acting chops as Caine, too. Firth has described the journey to finally getting the film made as a 'tortuous process' - he has been on board the project for four years. Diaz was last seen in superhero action flick Green Hornet, and will be next seen in adult comedy B

Judgment Day May 21

Judgment Day May 21 - By now you've seen the billboards all over the county (all over the nation, in fact), including a couple along Highway 94 in Lemon Grove and Spring Valley. Maybe you've passed them and not given them a second thought. Maybe they've made you stop and re-evaluate things. But the message on the billboards is all too clear: The world is going to end on Saturday, May 21. (So much for that family trip to Disney World this summer.) The Doomsday warning is being spewed by 89-year-old Harold Camping, who founded Christian group Family Radio and who has predicted—through careful study of the Bible—that May 21 is indeed Judgment Day. In an interview with New York Magazine last week, Camping said, “God has given sooo much information in the Bible about this, and so many proofs, and so many signs, that we know it is absolutely going to happen without any question at all.” Camping has incorrectly predicted the “end of days” before, for September 1994, bu

Gas Saving Driving Tips For Everyone

Gas Saving Driving Tips For Everyone - Slow down Each 5 miles per hour your drive over 60 mph is like paying an extra 24 cents per gallon for gas, when gasoline is selling at $3.96 per gallon, according to the government's fueleconomy.gov. "Think about sticking your hand out the window at 30 mph and sticking your hand out the window at 70 mph," said Ted Bohn, a research scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Lamont, Ill., and an adjunct engineering instructor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. "There's a lot more force on your hand. That's the same force that your wheels have to push the car forward, and it goes up exponentially" at higher speeds. Slowing down a bit also can keep an engine running at its most efficient level. Pushing it harder costs more. "The engine is working harder to maintain that faster speed so it's going to use more fuel to do that," said Mark Griffin, service adviser at Hands-On Garage in Mil

However, there is more to this stock than just a nice yield. The theater operator is expected to grow earnings by 40% this year and Wall Street is looking for earnings to jump another 16% in 2011. Despite the impressive growth rate, CNK trades at only 12x consensus 2011 earnings estimates. As a result Wall Street is bullish on the stock and analysts have an average $22 price target on the stock. Merck Merck (MRK: 37.27 0.00%) is going to end 2010 as one of the most disappointing stocks in the Dow Jones index. Despite the overall gains in the market, Merck will likely end 2010 in the red. Leonardo Dicaprio and Blake Lively

Leonardo Dicaprio and Blake Lively - The Oscar-nominee, 36, was snapped aboard a French yacht embracing the 23-year-old actress after the pair were reportedly introduced at a dinner hosted by Baz Luhrmann. The NY Post also reported the pair were seen around the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc, in the resort town of Antibes, in the south of France. "They walked around the grounds together," a source told the newspaper. "It looked like they were a couple." Lively had reportedly auditioned for a role in Luhrmann's upcoming The Great Gatsby, which ultimately went to Carey Mulligan. Meanwhile, Refaeli has been causing a stir of her own in the nearby town of Cannes, making a stunning appearance on the red carpet at the famed film festival. The 25-year-old, who had been dating DiCaprio on-and-off for five years, split from the star earlier this month. Leonardo Dicaprio and Blake Lively

Trade Salad for Drugs

Trade Salad for Drugs - A 33-year-old woman was charged Monday with trying to trade an undercover police officer $2 and a box of salad from the Salt Lake City Olive Garden for $10 worth of cocaine. On April 28, the woman told the undercover officer, outside the restaurant near 200 South and 300 West, that she would also return later with more money or Olive Garden gift cards in exchange for the cocaine, charging documents state. Police arrested the woman and found a glass pipe in her jacket pocket inside a cigarette pack. She is charged in 3rd District Court with attempted possession or use of a controlled substance, a third degree felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor. Coffee Lowers Prostate Cancer Risk

Coffee Lowers Prostate Cancer Risk - For a long time scientists have wondered whether coffee might lower the risk of prostate cancer. Previous studies have been relatively small and have shown mixed results. But now we've got results from a Harvard study that followed almost 50,000 male health professionals for more than two decades. A lot of them drank a lot of coffee, which seems to have helped. More than 5,000 of them got prostate cancer 642 of them the most lethal form. "For the men who drank the most coffee their risk of getting this bad form of prostate cancer was about 60 percent lower compared to the men who drank almost no coffee at all," says Lorelei Mucci, an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health and an author of the study. When they saw the results, Mucci says she and her colleagues said, "Wow, that's a lot!" "Among risk factors that people have studied for lethal prostate cancer, this is one of the strongest,"

The Rapture May 21

The Rapture May 21 - One evangelist's doomsday prediction has the world ending on Saturday, May 21. His followers and his radio network are running hundreds of billboards across the country, extolling that the apocalypse is nigh. If it doesn't happen, though, there's an Oakland-based atheist's group ready to help disappointed/unfulfilled believers with a party on Sunday. They've also raised their own counter-billboards to point at what they see as "nonsense." The American Atheists' 68-foot billboard near the Bay Bridge in San Francisco reads: The Rapture: You Know It's Nonsense: 2000 Years of "Any Day Now!" Similar signs are in Houston, Wichita, Kan., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The party goes down May 21-22 -- dates chosen specifically to highlight the "insanity" of this event, according to Larry Hicock, California Director of American Atheists. There's also societal danger involved when people sell their belongings

Pete Townshend Memoir

Pete Townshend Memoir - In a statement released Tuesday, Townshend called the book an "essential rite of passage," adding, "I am lucky to be alive and to have such a crazy story to tell, full of wild adventures and creative machinations. I am happy that I am able to write my book myself, in my own 'voice' that many readers will be hearing for the first time." The book will be edited by Harper Collins executive editor David Hirshey. Townshend's book agent is Ed Victor, who also repped Keith Richards' 2010 bestselling memoir "Life." Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Rock memoirs have been a hot category for publishers of late with both Sammy Hagar and Steven Tyler's tomes reaching the bestseller lists. Rolling Stone reported that Townshend began work on the autobiography in the late 1990s and that he had posted a small segment online in 2008. In 2003, when rumors circulated that Townshend was involved in a police investigation

Rabid Fox Bites Golfer

Rabid Fox Bites Golfer - Dennis Kincaid was chipping onto the green at hole 17 of the Granada Farms Country Club Golf Course on River Drive May 11 when it happened. "I had my head down," the 76-year-old Hickory man said. "[The fox] clamped down on my leg and wouldn't turn loose...I couldn’t throw it off and I couldn’t knock it off and I hollered for help." His golfing buddies came running, swinging golf clubs at the fox - and his leg - over and over. "One of the guys finally hit him in the back of the head and killed him. I’d say it wrestled with him for probably two minutes," Kincaid marveled. He and his friends had the presence of mind to bring the dead animal with them to urgent care. Animal control sent the carcass off to Raleigh for testing immediately, and got word back Friday that the animal was, in fact, rabid. The fox is the third confirmed report of rabies in Caldwell County this year. "If you see abnormal behavior out of wild

Amanda Knox Trial

Amanda Knox Trial - Amanda Knox, the US student convicted of murdering her British housemate in Italy, faces a fresh trial, charged with slandering police officers. The claims stem from the inquiries into the death of Meredith Kercher in 2007. At her murder trial, Knox, 23, claimed police hit her on the head during her interrogation. The police denied this. Knox, who is currently appealing against her murder conviction, told an earlier hearing she never intended slander and was just defending herself. If the American - who was due to appear in court on Tuesday - is found guilty, any additional jail term would be added to her existing 26-year sentence. Raffaele Sollecito, Knox's former boyfriend, is also appealing against his conviction for Miss Kercher's murder. Both Sollecito and Knox are awaiting the outcome of an independent examination of the forensic evidence in the case, which they say will prove their innocence. Knox's parents are also due to stand tri

Jill Scott Loses 50 Pounds

Jill Scott Loses 50 Pounds - According to Ebony Magazine, singer Jill Scott has lost more than 50 pounds and is at her smallest size in over 20 years. Scott will be featured in the magazine's June issue and told Ebony she lost the weight by eating healthier and doing "playful" workouts with her trainer and her family. "Anything that makes me feel like I'm not working out," the single mom of one says. "We go outside and throw footballs, go for walks." The neo-soul artist seems to be happy and motivated in anticipation of the release of her first album in four years, "The Light of the Sun." The album is expected to be released June 28. Danielle Staub Real Housewives

Danielle Staub Real Housewives - Danielle Staub, the former “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star, is returning to her roots. The former stripper, who demonstrated her chops on the show last season, has signed a deal with New York gentleman’s club Scores to make one live appearance at the club and appear on its website occasionally, according to TMZ. The website even posted photos of a topless Staub shimmying (rather grimly, I might add), apparently for the Scores website. (A step up from Shakers in Carlstadt, where Staub was a favorite back in the day? You tell me.) Staub left "Real Housewives of New Jersey" at the end of the second season, saying she was "too good' for it, although the show had painted itself into a corner, dramatically speaking, with her relationship with the other three housewives about seven restraining orders past salvagable. She was replaced by Melissa Gorga, who is married to Teresa Giudice's brother Joe, and the newcomers quickly amp

Dougie Rapper Killed

Dougie Rapper Killed - Preliminary police reports show that M-Bone, whose real name is Mante Ray Talbert, was sitting inside his car parked outside a liquor store in Los Angeles when another car pulled in near his and started shooting around 10:30 p.m. "Another car pulled alongside, gunshots were fired, and the victim was struck twice in the head," Lieutenant James Madia said, according to the Associated Press. The police official added that the man in M-Bone’s passenger seat not injured. Talbert was rushed to the nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Motives for the killing have remained unclear and the LA police vowed to look into all possibilities. Different motives for shooting have emerged in social networking sites and the authorities said they are investigating validity of various claims. Dougie Rapper Killed

Situation Sues Dad

Situation Sues Dad - The Situation's lawyers have sent an email to the elder Sorrentino warning him of a lawsuit and an emergency injunction to shut down the website broadcasting the videos, according to TMZ sources Tuesday. A rep for Frank Sorrentino said that the website would not be taken down and claimed they were not threatened by the email from The Situation's rep -- especially since the correspondence allegedly referred to a "lawsuit." Frank Sorrentino, divorced from The Situation's mother, posted the videos last week after the star of the hit MTV show allegedly ignored his request to help pay for medical insurance. "I've been a diabetic for 25 years and my insurance was running out and I called up my son and said, 'Listen, Mikey, I'm between jobs right now, can you help me out? I don't want to lose my health coverage'," he said in one video. "What I expected was a call back saying, 'Dad, are you OK?' I didn&

Blood Test Shows How Long You Live

Blood Test Shows How Long You Live - The controversial test measures vital structures on the tips of a person's chromosomes, called telomeres, which scientists believe are one of the most important and accurate indicators of the speed at which a person is ageing. Scientists behind the €500 (£435) test said it will be possible to tell whether a person's "biological age", as measured by the length of their telomeres, is older or younger than their actual chronological age. Medical researchers believe that telomere testing will become widespread within the next five or 10 years, but there are already some scientists who question its value and whether there should be stronger ethical controls over its wider use. In addition to concerns about how people will react to a test for how "old" they really are, some scientists are worried that telomere testing may be hijacked by unscrupulous organisations trying to peddle unproven anti-ageing remedies and other fak

Worst Speeding Ticket Excuses

Worst Speeding Ticket Excuses - These extravagant excuses include alien hypnosis, low-flying aircraft, a dying hamster and bouts of diarrhoea. Here is the top 10: 1) I had passed out after seeing flashing lights, which I believed to be UFOs in the distance. The flash of the camera brought me round from my trance. 2) I was in the airport's flight path and I believe the camera was triggered by a jet overhead, not my car. 3) I had a severe bout of diarrhoea and had to speed to a public toilet. 4) There was a strong wind behind my car, which pushed me over the limit. 5) My friend had just chopped his fingers off and I was rushing the fingers to hospital. 6) The vibrations from the surfboard I had on the roof rack set off the camera. 7) I had to rush my dying hamster to the vets. 8) A violent sneeze caused a chain reaction where my foot pushed down harder on the accelerator. 9) There was a suspected case of foot and mouth and I had to rush to see the cow concerned.

Highest Speed Limits

Highest Speed Limits - Texas gained the title of highest speed limit being set at 85mph in places when the bill takes effect. Before the bill was passed by the Texas House they still had the highest speed limit with some roads being 80mph. In Maine for Interstate 95 which leads from Old Towne to Houlton a bill has been purposed to raise the speed limit to 75 since reports of drivers already going that speed is in the masses. Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas has also recently signed a legislature raising the speed limit to 75 miles as well recieving information of people going that speed anyway. Many are happy at the rise in speed but still some are weary of the safety issues. Highest Speed Limits

Tylenol Blood Cancer

Tylenol Blood Cancer - It's one of the most frequently used medications worldwide, and if you use it, you could be putting your health at risk. The concern is that chronic acetaminophen use -- best known as Tylenol -- may be linked to blood cancer. A new report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that those who used acetaminophen at least four days a week over four years had two times the risk of blood cancer. The risk was not seen with the heavy use of other painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Scientists say, even though the risk is relatively small, more studies should be done to prove if there is a cause and effect. Tylenol Blood Cancer

Brown v Board of Education Anniversary

Brown v Board of Education Anniversary - Some members of the Cal Poly faculty will take time to honor the 57th anniversary of a monumental date in American history Tuesday. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that it was unconstitutional to racially segregate public schools. Universities around the country are observing the important anniversary, including Cal Poly. Nation-wide, faculty are holding "watching parties" where they will watch a live web-cast of the Washington DC launch event of the "Campaign for the Future of Higher Education". In all, 30 universities will watch. The goal of the initiative is to fight back against inequalities public higher education. Faculty presidents from various universities will lead the web-cast, including Lillian Taiz, President of the California Faculty Association, California State University. Buddha Day May 17 2011

Buddha Day May 17 2011 - Sri Lanka has made all arrangements to commemorate on a very grand scale the 2600th Anniversary of the Sri Sambuddhatwa Jayanthiya, which denotes the attainment of Buddhahood by Prince Siddhartha 2600 years ago, which falls tomorrow on the Wesak Fullmoon Day. Wesak Full Moon day, being the beginning of the 5th month of the Buddhist Calendar, is a very significant day for Buddhists since it coincides with the Birth of Prince Siddhartha, his attainment of Buddhahood and the death all falling on the same day. The Sri Lanka government has declared the year beginning with tomorrow as the Sri Sambuddhatwa Jayanthi Year. This declaration was made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a special ceremony held at the Sri Mahabodiya last Saturday. Sri Mahabodhiya, at the sapling of the Bo-Tree, under which Lord Buddha attained Buddhahood. This sapling was brought to Sri Lanka by the Buddhist monk Sangamitta Samanera, the daughter of King Asoka as a special gift for the B

Oregon Man Diary Froze

Oregon Man Diary Froze - It was a Valentine's Day that went unmarked on his otherwise-detailed log, a reused calendar from the 1970s in which he had crossed out bygone dates and filled in the current year. McDonald noted that he drove his blue 1997 GMC truck into the remote foothills of the Cascade Range on Feb. 7 and made camp, then woke up one day to find himself in the middle of a fast and heavy snowstorm. If McDonald had been awake, said Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller, he might have been able to see the flakes piling up, made plans to get out, deal with it. McDonald's body was discovered Thursday by a U.S. Forest Service survey crew, about 60 miles east of the state capital of Salem. An autopsy conducted Friday showed he died of hypothermia and starvation, Mueller said. Oregon Man Diary Froze

America's Most Wanted Canceled

America's Most Wanted Canceled - The Fox program, hosted by John Walsh, is responsible for capturing more than 1,000 criminals, including some of the biggest fugitives wanted by the FBI and DEA. But "AMW" isn't gone for good. Fox will air four, two-hour specials throughout the year, in addition to repeats. "We haven’t made money on the show in quite awhile," says Fox Entertainment president, Kevin Reilly. "It wasn’t particularly viable. We wanted to keep the franchise alive." "America's Most Wanted" has been canceled before, albeit temporarily. In 1996, Fox decided to air a block of "Married...With Children," "Martin" and two other shows in "AMW"'s timeslot. But after protests from the public, law enforcement and the governors from 37 states, Fox brought it back. America's Most Wanted Canceled

Genetic Link to Depression

Genetic Link to Depression - Scientists believe they have discovered a genetic link to one of the world's most common and costly mental illnesses. They are calling it the first solid evidence that variations on some people's genes may cause depression. Also, in a rare occurrence, a British led international team's findings of a DNA region linked to depression has been replicated by another team from the u-s. They were studying an entirely separate group of people. Both groups found exactly the same region in two separate studies. Scientists are hoping the findings will bring them closer to developing more effective treatments for patients with depression since currently available medicines for depression only work in around half of patients. Both studies are published in the Journal of Psychiatry. Genetic Link to Depression

Graduate College with Zero Debt

Graduate College with Zero Debt - Clarke, who also earned his bachelor's degree from Washburn, this summer is taking the state certified public accountant and bar exams. He doesn't think his debt is outrageous, considering the cost of education today, but others might feel differently. "It's scary," Clarke said. "A lot of people go into school and expect to make big money in jobs, but not every lawyer is going to a big firm." The average pay last year for the 600 lawyers in Shawnee County was $42.03 per hour, or $87,422 per year, according to the 2005 Kansas Wage Survey published by the Kansas Department of Labor. But salaries for lawyers can start in the $35,000 to $40,000 range. It is common to see wages for public defenders at $40,000, lawyers said. "I have seen jobs posted for $35,000," Clarke said. "I really got lucky because I have a job working at an accounting firm. I definitely don't regret it because I got a very good

Ohio Boy Suspended for Flatulence

Ohio Boy Suspended for Flatulence - An Ohio seventh-grader was suspended last week for doing arguably the most predictable thing a 13-year-old boy could do for a laugh on the school bus. He cut the cheese. Canal Winchester Middle School students Anthony Nichols and another boy lost their bus privileges on Friday for their stinky stunt, which prompted the customary rousing laughter and "lowering of windows," according to the Columbus Dispatch. Administrators ruled that the flatulence was in violation of the school's code of conduct, but if you ask Nichols' parents, the decision reeks of poor judgement. "It's very laughable, that's what it is," said Anthony's father, James Nichols. He said he spoke with the school's vice principal, Daniel Senu-Oke, who "suggested my son should hold his gas on this hour-long bus ride." For a concerned parent, however, that answer just doesn't cut it. "When it happens, it just happen

$5,000 Bowl of Soup

$5,000 Bowl of Soup - Your average bowl of Vietnamese phở should by no means break the bank. So what sets this one apart? Normally, one can expect to pay $10 at most for the mouth-watering broth-filled soup, laden with all the goodies like beef, noodles and cilantro. But from California comes a serving of the traditional staple that is simply exceptional – or so you would expect it to be. Why? It costs a minimum of $5,000 per bowl. (No, that's not the soup pictured above. It would be in a bowl made of diamonds if that were the case.) It seems utterly absurd to pay that much for a bowl of soup – let alone any meal. But it might soften the blow to know that the funds are going toward charity. Tiato, a Vietnamese restaurant in Santa Monica, is holding an invitation-only dinner and auction where the dish will make its debut. The bidding starts at $5,000 for the single bowl of AnQi Phở, and the ingredients are sure to not disappoint. The soup is made with A5 Wagyu beef, white alb

Nigerian 107 Wives

Nigerian 107 Wives - A Nigerian faith healer’s 107 marriages are being scrutinized by the Nigerian government and religious authorities. Bello Maasaba currently has 86 wives, and he plans to marry more women. Maasaba says he led a normal life with only two wives until he was 21-years-old. He claims a vision came to him while he was severely ill. Since Maasaba recovered, he has become a faith healer and begun taking more wives. Maasaba has divorced 12 of his wives, and nine of his wives have died. He is the father to 185 children, and his extended family includes roughly 5,000 members. Many members live in the area surrounding Maasaba’s compound. Islamic authorities and the Nigerian government have made several inquiries into Maasaba’s marriages. A Sharia court ordered the divorce of 82 wives in 2008, but Maasaba refused and was arrested. He was incarcerated for 22 days until Nigeria’s High Court freed him. Nigerian 107 Wives

Jesus Christ Mary Magdalene Couple

Jesus Christ Mary Magdalene Couple - A couple claims to be Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene reincarnated. The couple have set up a base in Queensland near Brisbane in Britain. They claim they have 30 to 40 followers. Christian Church leaders and especially Catholic church leaders in the United Kingdom are worried about the cult that these two have started. They ask that members be cautious when joining new movements. They definitely ask with good reason. Jesus and Mary, real names Alan John Miller and Mary Suzanne Luck, have been asking for donations to "sustain them." Police have said they have been called to investigate screams. They have learned that followers take part in a healing exercise that makes them shout to relieve "past soul damage." Even more scary is that some followers have sold their homes to be clsoer to the "Divine Truth" group. The Daily Telegraph reported, "Miller bought a 40-acre (16ha) property in 2007 and his Divine Tru
