Internet Service Provider Acquires Data Center

Internet Service Provider Acquires Data Center - Local Internet service provider RSAWeb
has acquired its second data centre
facility, in Cape Town, set to come online this month.

The new facility, which was bought from a leading financial services provider and is located in Gardens, was acquired in October and will be retrofitted to bring it up to standard and in line with industry requirements before services are launched in January 2011.

The company built its first data centre in Bree street, in Cape Town, in 2007. It provides the full range of RSAWeb’s hosting and colocation services.

“The acquisition of our new data centre was strategically made in light of increased demand for cloud computing services. South African businesses are starting to take note of the advantages of cloud hosting as opposed to traditional hosting models, like in-sourced data centres and dedicated servers,” says RSAWeb MD Rob Gilmour.

He also notes that the increase in inno-
vative technology companies and commu-nity-driven digital bodies is driving the growth of cloud computing in Cape Town.

He says that innovative technology com-
panies often grow quickly and require infrastructure that can scale along with them. Cloud computing and infrastructure as a service offering provide resources on demand and can be quickly scaled.

Earlier this year, RSAWeb introduced South Africa’s first true cloud server product, offering consumers needing to host locally a cloud hosting experience only available through overseas cloud giants, such as Rackspace and Amazon.

To date, over 2 000 cloud servers have been provisioned on the company’s cloud, all featuring ‘servers in seconds’ deployment, giving immediate availability to resources.

Gilmour adds that one of the most significant aspects of the newly acquired data centre is the ability to enable dual data centre redundancy.

He explains that data is only as safe as the location it is housed in. While most people worry about online security and availability of data, a physical outage or natural disaster that takes out a data centre can have catastrophic effects on business continuity if that data is not housed at and available from a second location.
