AeroCaribbean Flight 883 was heading to Cuba's capital from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba when it reported an emergency at 5:42 p.m. The plane then lost contact with air traffic controllers, crashed near the Cuban village of Guasimal and burst into flames.
Cuba's Civil Aviation Authority issued a list of passengers on Friday morning that included nine Argentines, seven Mexicans, three Dutch citizens, two Germans, two Austrians, a French citizen, an Italian, a Spaniard, a Venezuelan and a Japanese.
Some relatives of the passengers gathered at Havana's national terminal and were kept from reporters.
"This is very sad," said Caridad de las Mercedes Gonzalez, who was manning an airport information desk. "We are very worried. This has taken us by surprise."
No details have been given regarding he cause of the crash, but officials say it's an ongoing investigation.
In Pakistan, a plane also went down just after takeoff from Karachi on Friday killing all 21 passengers on board.
The official cause of that crash has yet to be announced as well.
The Pakistani charter plane, owned by JS Air, reported engine trouble just before going down near a residential and military area of the Gulistan-e-Jauhar suburb of Karachi, Pervez George, a spokesman for the country's civil aviation authority, said.
It was carrying employees from Italian multinational oil company ENI.
